Paid Internships with Montgomery County Department of Corrections & Rehabilitation

Salary - $11.50/hr.

The Department of Correction and Rehabilitation (DOCR) of Montgomery County, Maryland provides outstanding work and training experience for interns. The work/training programs are designed to meet the trainees and the correctional program's needs. All interns are eligible to receive academic credit and free Ride-On bus pass. This is an excellent opportunity for students who are interested in social work or law enforcement. Internships are available in two service areas.

PRE-RELEASE AND RE-ENTRY SERVICES (PRRS)
The Pre-Release Center (PRC) is a nationally recognized correctional model for community-based correctional and treatment services. The residential facility is located in Rockville, Maryland for adult offenders nearing release. The Pre-Release Center's program has a strong focus on assessment, case management, employment, treatment, intervention services, education, family and community involvement.

The intern work experience at the Pre-Release Center includes such activities as:

Screening and intake of Residents
Supervision of Residents
Adjustment Board Member
Support Case Managers, Work Release Coordinators and Career Resource Center Staff
Conducting community-based on-site verifications
Supervising recreational, MVA and Social Security Administration trips
Urinalysis collection and testing
Treatment Team Member
Crisis intervention
Data collection

Intern schedules at PRRS are either Sunday through Thursday or Tuesday through Saturday and are mostly evening hours.

PRE-TRIAL SERVICES (PTS):
The mission of the Montgomery County Pre-Trial Assessment and Supervision Units is to ensure all eligible defendants are afforded the opportunity for Pre-Trial release and to enhance public safety by providing community monitoring and referral to services that increase the likelihood of appearance for trial and to reduce the risk for re-arrest.

The intern work experience at Pre-Trial Services may involve a mixture of responsibilities in the following units:

Pre-Trial Assessment
Pre-Trial Supervision
Alternative Community Services Program (ACS)
Intervention for Substance Abusers Program (IPSA)

Intern schedules at PTS are Monday through Friday, generally during business daytime hours.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
  • Interns are assigned to a supervisor and receive weekly individualized and group training, as well as in-service and on-the-job training.
  • Montgomery County's Internship Program provides students an opportunity to combine academic studies with on-the-job training and local government experience. Undergraduate and graduate students will have an opportunity for unpaid and paid work experience in a progressive local government serving a diverse and well educated community.
  • Employee will be scheduled to work 24 hours per week for a minimum four (4) month commitment, up to one year.
All applicants must complete a background investigation and a physical exam which includes a drug and alcohol screen
Requirements:
Experience:  None.
Education:  Completion of two (2) years of college in the social science, human services, or criminal justice fields.
Equivalency:  None.

LICENSE:
Possession and maintenance at all times of a valid Class "C" (or equivalent) driver's license from the applicant's state of residence.
Preference in scheduling interviews will be given to applicants currently enrolled in school or who have recently graduated with a human services related major (includes criminal justice, social work, psychologysociology, rehabilitation, counseling) and/or who clearly state their interest in pursuing a career in a human services related field (includes criminal justice, corrections, social work, employment/vocational counseling, counseling, psychology).
