Legal Aid Internship

Considering a law-related career? Interested in gaining hands-on legal experience while earning credit? Apply for a Fall 2018 Internship with the Undergraduate Student Legal Aid Office!

Our internship is on campus. Interns earn 3 credits which includes office hours and a weekly class taught by the attorney. Our internship fulfills the internship requirement for the MLAW minor.

SLAO provides free legal advice to all undergraduate students at UMCP who may need it. We handle a variety of legal issues. We also provide mediation and notary services. Student defenders assist other undergraduate students with University charges for violations of the Codes of Student Conduct or Academic Integrity. We employ students as interns and as Student Defenders. Our office is funded by the SGA and is paid for by student fees.

Interns assist attorney when giving legal advice to students. They manage the case file and all communication with the clients. Interns are responsible for being the first point of contact for the office. The attorney teaches a class for the interns on Tuesday afternoon. This class serves as an introduction to the topics covered in your first year of law school. Case briefs and other legal writing projects will be assigned. Students earn three graded credits.

Our office offers free legal advice to all undergraduate students. Interns must be undergraduates and have completed 56 credit hours at the beginning of the internship, 12 of which must be from UMCP. We welcome all majors and all class years. A prior knowledge of the law is not required.
