2018 Maryland Crime Victims' Rights Conference - On Campus



The Governor's Office of Crime Control & Prevention, in partnership with the Maryland State Board of Victim Services, is pleased to announce that registration is open for the 2018 Maryland Crime Victims' Rights Conference on Thursday, April 12, 2018, at the Adele H. Stamp Student Union at the University of Maryland. This conference offers innovative best practices and tools for victim service professionals to serve victims of crime in Maryland. At the conference, Governor Hogan will present the Governor's Victim Assistance Awards to three Marylanders who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to assist crime victims.

Advocacy Internship, Europe & Asia - Summer 2018 Amnesty International


Position description

The Advocacy/Government Relations Program is part of Amnesty International USA (AIUSA), which works to promote human rights in the U.S. and worldwide. AIUSA is dedicated to holding the U.S. government and governments around the world accountable to international human rights obligations and commitments. The Advocacy/Government Relations team works with members of Congress and the executive (U.S. Department of State, National Security Council, White House, etc) to ensure that human rights are prioritized and protected worldwide.
Internship Overview
Interns will have the opportunity to work on federal advocacy on human rights issues in Washington, D.C. The internship is full-time and requires a minimum twelve-week commitment for Summer 2018.
Roles and Responsibilities
Interns will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience by working directly with the Advocacy Director for Europe and Central Asia. Interns will gain experience in human rights research and advocacy including but not limited to developing and implementing advocacy strategies and materials, liaising with governmental bodies and officials, conducting legislative research, drafting memoranda and blogs, analyzing emerging areas of relevant law and government policy, tracking the progress of legislation in the United States Congress, and learning about the international human rights framework. Interns will also be responsible for researching and documenting issues related to U.S. foreign policy and human rights in their area of focus, as well as attending and summarizing briefings, hearings, and other NGO events. 
Experience with political advocacy and/or grassroots activism, especially related to refugees, LGBT issues, civil society defense, fundamental human rights is also desirable.

Qualifications

This Internship is open to recent college graduates (graduated within the last 6-months) and students who will have completed their first year of college before the internship commences. Interns should possess the following:
  • Demonstrated familiarity with Europe/Central Asia and human rights in Europe/Central Asia
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Experience developing external facing documents (e.g reports, policy briefs, talking points, advocacy messages, strategic plans, press releases, and memoranda.) with minimal editorial oversight.
  • Excellent research skills, especially the ability to conduct congressional research
  • Energetic, highlight motivated, and proactive outlook with excellent time management skills
  • Proficiency in Russian or Turkish is a plus.

BSOS Presents: The Feller Lecture featuring NBC News’ Chuck Todd and Mike Viquiera


On Thursday, April 12 the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences will present the first Feller Lecture: a timely political commentary and discussion featuring Chuck Todd, moderator of NBC’s “Meet the Press,” and alumnus Mike Viqueira, a journalist and author. Dr. Irwin Morris, Chair of the Department of Government and Politics, will moderate the event.
The Feller Lecture, established via a generous donation from alumni Joel J. Feller (GVPT ’90) and Kim A. Feller (’89), will begin at 7:30 p.m. on April 12 inside the Gildenhorn Recital Hall at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center. Please register here but be advised that a reservation does not guarantee admittance. Seats will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis until the venue reaches capacity.
About the featured guests:
Chuck Todd is moderator of “Meet the Press” on NBC and the host of “MTP Daily” on MSNBC. Todd is also NBC News’ political director and serves as an on-air political analyst for Nightly News with Lester Holt and TODAY. Todd took over as NBC’s chief White House correspondent in December 2008 and has since broadcast live reports from more than 25 countries on five continents.


Mike Viqueira (GVPT ’86) is a seasoned journalist and author of “You Didn’t Get This From Me: A Novel of Media and Politics,” which satirically chronicles the challenges faced by today’s journalists. Viqueira has served as an NBC and MSNBC congressional correspondent, a White House Correspondent, and a Senior Washington Correspondent and Bureau Chief for Al Jazeera America.

Want to make a difference in the life of abused or abandoned children in your community? There are over 500 youth in foster care in Prince George’s County and Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) is looking for compassionate and motivated individuals to advocate for these youth. In about 10 hours a month, CASA volunteers create relationships with youth in foster care to ensure that the court and child welfare systems remain focused on their specific needs and finding a safe permanent home. Paid Internship with Children Defense Fund Freedom Schools


Children Defense Fund Servant Leader Intern Position 2018 
Baltimore Junior Academy

College-age young people and recent college graduates play a key role in the Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools® program as servant leader interns. CDF Freedom Schools servant leader interns are responsible for the front-line care and nurturing of the children. Using the Integrated Reading Curriculum, they serve as facilitators in the classroom and as leaders of parent workshops and community outreach activities.

Responsibilities· Deliver the Integrated Reading Curriculum to a class of no more than ten students for 6–8 weeks during the summer months, according to the standards developed by the Children's Defense Fund and the local program sponsor.
· Set up and break down his/her classroom space, including securing and organizing the appropriate materials.
· Collaborate with staff to establish and maintain a supportive and structured environment for the children entrusted to their care.
· Serve as a Harambee leader each day of program operation. (Daily morning exercises)
· Serve as a leader of afternoon activities and other special events; chaperone field trips.
· Participate fully in the National Training. (1st, 2nd and 3rd year servant leader interns only).

Qualifications· Must be at least 19-30 years of age, have completed at least one year of college, and have plans to complete the college degree
· Maintain or have graduated with at least a 3.0 GPA
· Experience managing large groups of children, college-age young people, and parents
· Solid commitment to children’s advocacy and enthusiasm for the CDF Freedom Schools program
· Ability to motivate others and work as part of an intergenerational team
· Strong appreciation and understanding of individual cultural history and the willingness to be open and respectful of all cultures
· Willingness to strive for excellence in all areas and ability to think critically and analytically
· Exhibit positive behavior and attitude; model a mature and professional demeanor; possess excellent written and verbal skills
· Strong interpersonal skills and commitment to the ethics of good character, humility, and servant leadership
· Current voter registration (as eligible by law)
· Authorization for background check for criminal and child protective findings
