Elder Justice Project Intern

ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION:
Started in 2012, Network for Victim Recovery of DC (NVRDC) empowers victims of all crimes to achieve survivor defined justice through a collaborative continuum of advocacy, case management and legal services.
In 2014, NVRDC launched DC TROV: The District’s Collaborative Training & Response for Older Victims. DC TROV is a multidisciplinary team dedicated to improving the response to victims of elder abuse by increasing the ability of governmental agencies, victim assistants, law enforcement personnel, prosecutors, and local courts to recognize, assist, investigate, and prosecute elder abuse.
DC TROV partners include: NVRDC; Adult Protective Services; Metropolitan Police Department; Legal Counsel for the Elderly; the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia; DC Coalition Against Domestic Violence; DC Office on Aging; DC Forensic Nurse Examiners Program; Office of the Attorney General for the District of Columbia; Domestic Violence Unit of the Superior Court; and Long Term Care Ombudsman.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Elder Justice Project Intern will ultimately improve the lives of victims of elder abuse by assisting the Elder Justice Coordinator and the Evaluator with a DC TROV Needs Assessment. The Needs Assessment process includes gathering existing data, engaging partners and community organizations, and surveying seniors in the community. The goal of this assessment is to identify gaps in services and set priorities for new or enhanced services for older victims of abuse.
Additionally, the Elder Justice Project Intern will have the opportunity to work closely with NVRDC’s Elder Justice Coordinator and Evaluator, attend all DC TROV meetings, network with project partners and learn about elder justice work currently underway in various District agencies and organizations.

DUTIES:
·           Assist the Elder Justice Coordinator and the Evaluator in researching existing data sets from the DC Office on Aging, Adult Protective Services, and other sources regarding the prevalence of elder abuse, neglect, and financial fraud in the District and the response by professionals in the government and community.
·           Assist the Elder Justice Coordinator and the Evaluator in the development of surveys for partners and community organizations to distribute to their staff who serve seniors, and seniors on problem scope and service needs.
·           Assist the Elder Justice Coordinator and the Evaluator in creating an outreach plan to gather input from key stakeholders such as Adult Protective Services workers, aging network staff, victim service providers, criminal justice professionals, civil attorneys, health care providers, faith leaders and others who interact with seniors through their work or volunteerism.
·           Distribute and/or administer the surveys at senior centers, sites specific to marginalized populations, public libraries, churches, and outreach events in the community.
·           Complete data entry to ensure results are collected in a timely fashion.

BENEFITS:
The Elder Justice Project Intern will be provided a living stipend for three months of full-time service during the summer of 2018 in the amount of $2,500.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS: Interest in serving victims of crime and/or vulnerable aging population. Completion of college level statistics or Research Methods class preferred and/or experience with survey data collection.  Prior experiences working with senior population a plus.

LOCATION:
NVRDC is located at 6856 Eastern Avenue NW, with convenient metro access a few blocks away at the Takoma Park metro station. While the intern will primarily be located at NVRDC, there will be periodic elder justice team meetings as well as trips to learn about and visit partner agencies throughout DC who are involved in the response to victims of elder abuse (police, prosecution, elder survivor housing, hospital crisis response, etc.).
