Some of the duties you'll perform as a PPO include:

  • Motivational Interviewing: You'll establish rapport with offenders and enhance their motivation to succeed through collaborative communication, confronting issues in a non-threatening manner, and using positive and negative reinforcements. You'll identify each client's needs and risk factors, develop timelines to help them meet their goals, and implement action plans for clients and their families. 
  • EPICS (Effective Practices in Community Supervision): You will be trained and use a research driven case management model specifically designed to address the highest criminogenic risk domains. EPICS includes a focus on the use of cognitive behavioral interventions.
  • Effective Communication: Your ability to communicate in a respectful manner and adapt your communication style for diverse audiences will be key to working effectively with clients, community partners and co-workers. Your writing skills and attention to detail will enable you to prepare accurate, well-written reports and documents for the courts, treatment agencies and other stakeholders, often within tight timelines. 
  • Investigation and Public Safety Work: You will conduct field investigations, adhering to specific protocols and standards, to uncover facts that are often hidden, unique or complex. You will utilize your crisis prevention, intervention and de-escalation skills to keep the community, your clients and yourself safe.
  • Organization and Time Management: You will be responsible for organizing and prioritizing your own workload to meet strict deadlines. (This can be challenging in a setting where work tasks and priorities change frequently.) You will work independently and as part of a team, and you'll develop creative and innovative ideas to handle your caseload as efficiently as possible.
All candidates must be able to communicate and interact effectively and professionally with people from diverse backgrounds.

Fall Internships with Human Rights Watch


Human Rights Watch is advertising the following fall internships in Washington:

The US Program of Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking undergraduate interns for the fall 2017 semester in the Washington, D.C. office. Ideally, the candidates will be available to intern 10 to 15 hours a week (dates and hours are flexible). 

The interns will learn about human rights issues within the US, especially those related to criminal justice and immigration policy. Specific assignments will enable students to learn about bail and sentencing reform, criminalization of drug possession, and juveniles caught in the justice system. Interns will be oriented to HRW’s research methods and gain skills in their ability to conduct research and analyze data. They will also learn how to effectively monitor the press and draft documents regarding human rights issues in the United States. They will have exposure to HRW’s methods for compiling case histories and researching relevant state and federal policies. Additional projects will be assigned as the opportunity arises.

The intern must be an enrolled student for the duration of the internship term. Applicants should be well-organized, self-motivated, and reliable with a strong interest in US domestic human and civil rights issues, particularly related to criminal justice and immigration policy. Relevant coursework is highly desirable and knowledge of Spanish is a plus. Computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office, internet applications) and experience completing social science research are required. Apply here.


The Middle East and North Africa (“MENA”) division of Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is currently seeking interns for the Fall 2017 semester in the Washington, D.C. office. The selected candidate will intern closely with the Middle East and North Africa associates and researchers. Ideally, the candidate will be available for at least 20-hours per week for three months, beginning as soon as possible.

The internship is unpaid. Students are often able to arrange academic credit, as HRW internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by the HRW staff, interaction with international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials, and opportunities to attend lectures, trainings and special events relating to human rights. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.


The internship will focus on the following: 
  • Research: The intern will perform various short-term and long-term research assignments using sources in English and Arabic. Research will focus on a range of human rights and humanitarian law abuses across the Middle East and North Africa. The intern may help HRW staff conduct phone interviews with victims of and witnesses to human rights violations. The intern will also assist with the production and release of reports and press releases. 
  • Monitoring and Advocacy: The intern will assist with monitoring and summarizing MENA political and policy developments. The intern will also have the opportunity to attend internal and/or external advocacy strategy meetings. 
Other duties and projects will be assigned as they arise.

This position is open to students in law, social studies, international relations, political science, or related subjects with strong writing and research skills. Applicants must be enrolled as students for the entirety of the internship. Excellent oral and written command of English and Arabic are essential. Applicants should demonstrate precise attention to detail, the ability to follow instructions, conscientiousness about checking one’s own work, a positive attitude, a proactive approach, and good judgment. Applicants should be well-organized, self-motivated, and reliable with a strong interest in human rights and some familiarity with the current situation in MENA. The Africa Division of Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking undergraduate student interns for the fall 2017 semester in the Washington, D.C. office. The intern will focus on Human Rights Watch projects surrounding West Africa issues. Ideally, the intern will be available for a minimum of 10 hours per week for 3-4 months starting in September 2017, with the option to extend into spring 2018.

This internship is unpaid. Students may be able to arrange academic credit, as HRW internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by the HRW staff, interaction with other US and international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials, and opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, and special events relating to human rights. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.


The internship will consist primarily of press monitoring and compiling reports on news from Mali, Guinea, Côte d’Ivoire, Gambia, and Senegal. Other responsibilities will include small research assignments, data management and analysis, drafting documents regarding issues in Africa, and attending external meetings. Other projects may be assigned as they arise and match the student's interests and abilities.

The intern must be an undergraduate student for the duration of the internship term. Applicants should be well-organized, self-motivated and reliable, with strong attention to detail. A strong interest in human rights, specifically concerning Africa is essential. Relevant coursework is highly desirable. Computer skills (i.e., Microsoft Office, internet applications) and internet based research skills are essential. Proficient reading and writing ability in French is required, at the intermediate level or above.  Apply here.

Special Needs Health Internship with the International Rescue Committee


Location: Baltimore

PURPOSE: Many newly arrived refugees and asylees are considered medically vulnerable, whose complex medical conditions have been compounded by living conditions overseas.  Upon arrival to the United States, they are further challenged to effectively navigate the US healthcare system and access important community health resources.   The Special Health Needs program focuses on reducing healthcare disparities for medically vulnerable clients by connecting them to healthcare, education, resources, and psychosocial support. 

The Special Health Needs Intern will play the vital role of supporting the Special Needs Care Coordinator in providing intensive medical case management and psychosocial support services to medically vulnerable refugees and asylees.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assist with provision of medical care coordination services for medically vulnerable clients (i.e. health insurance applications, medical appointments , support service appointments, home visits)material resource referrals and home visits)
  • Serve as a patient advocate by accompanying clients to medical appointments, aiding clients in navigating local healthcare services, as well as coordinating necessary follow-up care.
  • Provide individual and family-centered health education to reinforce clients’ understandings of health conditions, treatment instructions, medical service plan, and follow-up care.
  • Develop and/or adapt medical case management tools, health resources and educational materials for use by staff, volunteers, and clients.
  • Assist with research and outreach to develop partnerships with medical providers and community organizations.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
  1. To gain an understanding of the refugee resettlement process and health disparities experienced by newly arrived refugees within the US healthcare system
  2. To learn how to effectively facilitate and advocate for clients’ access to timely and culturally appropriate medical care.
  3. To learn how to create/adapt/identify culturally appropriate health educational resources and services for clients.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience in public health, health education, behavioral or social sciences, international development or related field
  • High level of cultural sensitivity and interest in working in a multicultural setting
  • Organized with great attention to detail and great flexibility
  • Able to work independently and effectively as a team member in a fast-paced environment
  • Reliable and responsible for attending all appointments and meetings scheduled
  • A car/driver’s license and willingness to transport clients to/from health-related appointments/events
  • Strong communication and writing skills
  • Strong computer skills: MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and experience with graphic design.
  • Proficiency in a foreign language, including Arabic, Amharic, Burmese, Chin, Nepali, Swahili or Tigrinya is beneficial but not required.

Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY:
Big Brothers Big Sisters at the Y seeks an entry level professional to join our team as part of the BBBSY Southeast Initiative.  This position will focus on the recruitment, screening, matching, and support of youth and volunteers paired in mentoring relationships. The Program Specialist is responsible for providing high-level customer service in the volunteer and parent/child enrollment and matching process while executing a high degree of independent judgment in accordance with the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA) national standards.  The Program Specialist delivers tailored guidance, direction and risk management assistance to volunteers and families.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Ensure high-level proficiency in applying child safety and risk management knowledge, policies and procedures throughout all aspects of job function
  • Conduct volunteer enrollments including individual orientations, interviews and completion of enrollment processes
  • Conduct parent/child enrollments at the child’s home and provide child safety education and program orientation; assess and refer families for alternative or additional services as needed
  • Meet established monthly and annual goals for new matches, match quality, documentation quality, processing time and customer satisfaction
  • Maintain accurate paperwork and data entry into agency web-based system for each participant according to agency standards including completion of necessary surveys
  • Provide timely and comprehensive reports and recommendations for participation in the program based upon enrollment information and assessments of each potential match participant
  • Nurture and sustain the mentoring experience for volunteer adults and youth matched in our program
  • Effectively coach and motivate volunteers to grow relationships that result in positive youth development
  • Partner with community organizations and recruit volunteers and youth for program participation
  • Partner with other youth-serving and community organizations in Southern Maryland to re-establish the presence of BBBSY in the area.
  • Other Duties as assigned

WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Must have own reliable mode of transportation and use to perform certain job requirements.
  • Must have current and valid driver’s license to operate motor vehicle.
  • Must maintain current and valid insurance to cover personal mode of transportation. Ability to perform office related tasks and utilize required office equipment, including telephone, cell phone, fax machine, copy machine, and computer equipment. 

Required Skills
  • Must be fluent in Spanish (written and spoken)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills reflecting solid customer service and high-level interviewing skills
  • Demonstrated ability to: form appropriate assessment-based relationships; relate well in multicultural environments; maintain confidentiality throughout daily operations; effectively collaborate with other volunteer match staff; use time effectively; and focus on details.
  • Demonstrated ability to collect meaningful data and draw solid conclusions
  • Proficiency in computer skills including Word, Outlook, and Excel.
Required Experience
EDUCATION –
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in social services, human resources or related field.
EXPERIENCE –
  • At least one (1) year of work experience in the field of social services, human resources or a related
  • Demonstrated work experience working with both child and adult populations
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite and the Google Platform
