On December 18, Smith will return to College Park to address graduates at the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences’ Winter Commencement ceremony. Smith, a winter graduate himself nine years ago, says he has always felt pressure to represent the Terps proudly: “Everything that I do is going to be a reflection of the university in one way or another. There’s a lot of responsibility that comes with that.”

SAFE Center for Human Trafficking Survivors is hiring a Case Manager



The University of Maryland Support, Advocacy, Freedom, and Empowerment (SAFE) Center for Human Trafficking Survivors is hiring a Human Trafficking Case Manager. The SAFE Center is dedicated to providing direct services, research, and advocacy in the field of human trafficking. Through in-house service provision and collaboration with partners, the Center provides comprehensive social, legal, mental health, medical, and economic empowerment services to survivors of sex and labor trafficking of any age, nationality, or gender. The Human Trafficking Case Manager will provide crisis intervention and case management services to domestic and foreign national victims of human trafficking, as well as assist with social services program development, training, and outreach. This is a full-time position located in College Park, Maryland. Candidates will be required to complete a background check.

Minimum Qualifications:
• Education: Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, counseling, public health, education, or another relevant human development field.
• Experience: Demonstrated experience working with survivors of trafficking, sexual assault, domestic violence, or other crimes or trauma; or experience working on a crisis hotline or on overnight shifts as a rape crisis advocate, EMT, suicide prevention counselor, or other emergency / crisis response.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 
• A positive, cooperative, affirming, and professional demeanor with clients, partner organizations, volunteers/interns, and team members.
• Desire and ability to work together with professionals of other disciplines (law, economic empowerment, medical, etc.) as part of a multi-disciplinary team on behalf of clients.
• Ability to gather and assess information, weigh options, and exercise excellent independent judgment.
• Demonstrated ability to work well with culturally diverse populations. Must be empathetic and skilled in active listening.
• Comfortable meeting trafficking survivors at a police station, hospital, or other such settings.
• Organized, flexible, and able to multi-task.
• Must have a current, valid drivers’ license and be able to drive a car.
• Fluency in Spanish is preferred but not required.

Rangel Summer Enrichment Program for International Affairs


Are you an undergraduate student planning a career in International Affairs? Do you receive need-based financial aid?

If so, you should learn about the Rangel Summer Enrichment program for students with strong interests in pursuing careers in international affairs. The program provides undergraduate students with a deeper appreciation of current issues and trends in international affairs, a greater understanding of career opportunities in international affairs, and the enhanced knowledge and skills to pursue such careers.

This all-expenses-paid program takes place at Howard University from June 15 to July 24, 2020. The program includes courses (with transferable credit), a full range of extracurricular activities and career-development support, travel, and room & board!

Program Preferences: The Rangel program encourages the application of members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service; the program has a strong focus on students who receive need-based financial aid (demonstrated by FAFSA).

The WHS Pathways Programs are planned, progressive, education programs that provide for integration of a student's academic studies and federal work experience with the potential for conversion to a permanent or term appointment in the competitive service. Work assignments are designed to permit the knowledge acquired through education/training to be applied to particular work situations with on-the-job training and/or self development.
Responsibilities
This announcement will be used to fill full-time or part-time internship positions during the Spring 2020 Semester, and/or the entire 2020-2021 academic year.

As a STUDENT INTERN (FOREIGN AFFAIRS), GS-0199-5/7/9, your typical work assignments may include the following under supervision:
  • Serve as a Student Trainee (Foreign Affairs) conducting research and providing support to higher grade specialist on foreign affairs issues associated with specific functional area(s) to include but not limited to geographic areas, national security, international security, security affairs, special operations, strategic affairs; Congressional, Policy, DoD and USG interagency processes; and defense resource and planning activities.
  • Conduct research on foreign policy issues.
  • Assist higher graded specialist and provide analysis of policy, strategy, concept, and program issues, force posture alternatives, and implications of changes to the international environment and defense programs.
  • Perform foreign affairs analytical and writing assignments of moderate difficulty that support the Department of Defense missions and conform with organizational formats and performance standards.
