Letter Grade Policy UPDATE

Dear Students,

The website for students to record their choice of grading method for each course (pass/fail or letter grade) reopened on May 22  and will close May 31, 2020, at 11:59 pm. Students can make changes as many times during that period as they wish. Students are encouraged to update their grading method early to ensure they have the final grading method that they want. STUDENTS SHOULD NOT WAIT UNTIL MAY 31 TO LOG ON TO TESTUDO. May 31 is the last day a student may verify a grade method change.

To update your grading method:

  • Go to Testudo
  • Select the “UPDATE SPRING 2020 GRADING METHOD” box
  • Click edit, make changes, click submit. Students must click “submit” to save changes.
  • Changes made in this application will not be visible on the Grades application, nor in the Unofficial Transcripts, until the following day. Students are encouraged  to check their updates the following day by viewing their grades using the Grades or Unofficial Transcript capabilities in Testudo. You will be unable to verify your grades after May 31 at 11:59 pm.

Students who wait until the last possible day to record their choice will risk making errors.
If you currently have your grading method set as the default Pass/Fail and you do not know your grades prior to using the Grades application, make sure to log on prior to May 31 and switch to Letter Grade. The next day you should be able to see the grade your instructor submitted. You may either keep the letter grade or switch back to Pass/Fail.

There are no exceptions after May 31.

If  you have difficulty using the application, please send an email immediately to registrar-help@umd.edu for assistance.

Financial & Informational Resources for UMD Students during COVID-19

Below is a list of helpful financial and informational resources for UMD students during this challenging time. If you have questions about any of these resources, please reach out to the Center for Student Engagement & Financial Resources at shadygrove@umd.edu.

Extension of Spring 2020 Grading Method--FINAL deadline

As we near the completion of the spring 2020 semester, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you all, as well as our faculty and staff, for the truly extraordinary flexibility and dedication you have displayed as we worked through the many challenges presented to us by the COVID-19 pandemic.

These are certainly unprecedented times, and we should all be proud of how well we have managed to cope.  Over the past several months many people have worked hard, adjusting the University’s operating systems and policies to our unexpected and evolving circumstances. We have continuously reevaluated these efforts in order to be as supportive as possible and to strengthen your academic experience.

Towards that end, in March we announced the adoption of a default pass/fail grading method in consultation with current UMD students, faculty members, deans, and department chairs, as well as our peer institutions across the country. You may recall that the announcement of this interim grading policy indicated that students had a deadline of May 12, the last day of classes, to go online and elect to receive a letter grade rather than accept the pass/fail grading method.

I now understand that some students were confused or had other concerns about the process and timing required to decline the pass/fail grading option. I write today to acknowledge those concerns, and to announce an additional final period in which to choose the letter grade option.

The website for making your grading choices will open again at noon May 22, 2020, to give you another opportunity to choose to receive letter grades; it will close again at 11:59pm, May 31, 2020.
If you are satisfied with your current grading choices, you need not do anything.  If, however, you wish to receive a letter grade for a course and have not yet successfully made that choice electronically, you will need to visit the website:  https://app.testudo.umd.edu/#/main/gradeoptions?termId=202001 before the May 31 deadline and designate that choice for each course for which you have not yet indicated your wish to receive your earned letter grade.  There will be no further extensions beyond that time so please make your selection carefully and in time to check and be sure that all changes were successfully made as you intended.

Please note also that extending this deadline means that availability of transcripts and diplomas will be delayed slightly after the end of the semester.  We will make every effort to minimize this inconvenience.
I wish you all the very best as we finish this challenging semester and look forward to celebrating with our graduating seniors tomorrow at Maryland’s first-ever virtual commencement.
Please take care and be well,

    Dr. Mary Ann Rankin

Keep Connected to UMD - May 20, 2020

    Dear Terps!

You did it!  The semester is done and commencement is in two days!  Wow!!  What a semester it has been, wonderful Terrapins.  But you made it - and we did it - together as Terps!  You made the move from campus to home, from classrooms to online, from in-person meetings to virtual ones.  You made the transition in uncertain times and I could not be more proud of all you have overcome. You stayed the course and modeled what it means to be a Terp - sticking your neck out, one step at a time!

So, I want to say “THANK YOU!”' Thank you for supporting each other. Thank you for helping to carry this university and this community forward, even through the toughest of times. And, thank you for taking these hard-learned lessons into your future to make a better life for yourselves, for our university, and for others.

Through this semester of change and uncertainty, and beyond, I am here to remind you that Student Affairs has got you! And you’ve got this!  And you did it!  We celebrate you, so celebrate yourselves.

Class of 2020 - congratulations!  This will always be home so we cannot wait for you to visit often.  And, to all other students, we cannot wait to see you soon.

Be well, wonderful people - Patty

    Patty Perillo
    Vice President for Student Affairs
