The College of Behavioral and Social Sciences is accepting applications for the Summer Research Initiative (BSOS SRI)! If you're looking for a paid summer program that will give you research experience in the behavioral and social sciences, then we encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity. The review period is from February – April 2022 and selection announcements will be made beginning April 2022. 

The BSOS Summer Research Initiative is part of the UMD’s College of Behavioral and Social Science’s long-standing commitment to increasing the number of underrepresented minorities who pursue graduate degrees in the social and behavioral sciences. The program provides rising juniors and seniors with an 8-week intensive experience to develop research skills, learn about doctoral training, and increase graduate training readiness. The SRI provides:

  • A $3,000 stipend (before taxes)
  • Travel to/from College Park, Maryland
  • University housing and meals
  • Program activities
Program Dates: The 2022 BSOS SRI runs from June 6, 2022 - July 29, 2022. Participants are required to arrive Saturday, June 4th for the weekend orientation.

Key Expectations and Qualifications

  • Be citizens or permanent residents of the United States;
  • Be enrolled full-time at an accredited four-year higher education institution, with preference given to those will have obtained junior or senior status by the fall 2022;
  • Demonstrate an interest in pursuing graduate study in one of the behavioral or social sciences, with preference given to those interested in doctoral studies;
  • Will have taken a basic statistics or research methodology course; and
  • Possess an excellent academic record, including a 3.0 or better cumulative GPA

House of Ruth, a comprehensive domestic violence program, has a legal advocate position available.  The position is located in the Hyattsville (Prince George's County) district court.  The hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 - 4:30.  The starting salary is $40,000. Preference is given to candidates who are bilingual in Spanish and English.  Anyone who is interested should email their resume and cover letter to me at dlennig@hruthmd.org.

Our areas of focus are government (Civilian and DOD agencies), Commercial, Education, and Non-Profits. We are looking for a candidate who has a strong desire for industries such as government affairs/relations, contracting, government service, public health, and/or IT security. o   Unpaid [Check with your advisor regarding academic credit.  Internships with startups less than two years old do not qualify for BSOS 288I, BSOS 355, or BSOS 386.]

o   Learning outcomes: Work with higher graded staff in support of office programs and activities to gain practical work experience with respect to Government contracts and contractors

The University Career Center at the University of Maryland is seeking to fill a Career Events Coordinator (CEC) opening.

The CEC coordinates all event activity sponsored by the University Career Center & The President’s Promise (Center). This includes the planning and execution of campus-wide and boutique career & internship fairs, industry and population-specific programs, networking events, site visits, panels, and other employer/alumni engagement opportunities, etc.  It also includes Center events, such as advisory board meetings, industry/consortium conferences and staff retreats. This position works collaboratively with all Center staff, and requires regular coordination with the Marketing, Business Services, IT and Assessment areas. The Coordinator reports to the Associate Director, Professional Preparation.

Event Support and Management:

The Career Events Coordinator will support a wide variety of Center-based events to meet the needs of our many stakeholders. The position will also support the career programming efforts initiated by embedded College staff and their constituents.  The Coordinator will serve as the project manager for said events and will ensure successful pre-event, day-of and post-event execution. 

Qualifications: 

A Bachelor’s degree plus at least one year of relevant full-time work experience is required. An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be substituted for the degree. Successful candidates for the position will have one year experience coordinating events or in project management, work with employers, or a customer-service focused role. 

The position requires excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, strong interpersonal, communication and customer service skills. A successful candidate will possess the ability to work with and among diverse groups, and exhibit a commitment to inclusive practices. Demonstrated time management and problem resolution skills, as well as, the ability to multitask and manage competing deadlines are sought. The position requires schedule flexibility and a willingness to occasionally work outside of core hours as needed. 

Preferences:

Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of Google workspace, project management platforms and career and event management platforms. Ability to learn website and design software (Drupal, Canva, Adobe Suite).
