Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project Research Internship PAID

Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project Research Internship PAID

 Location: Remote

Application Deadline: April 24, 2022 at 11:59 P.M. CET

About OCCRP

The Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) is a growing, global nonprofit media organization that is reinventing investigative journalism for the public good. By developing and equipping a global network of investigative journalists and publishing their stories, we expose crime and corruption so the public can hold power to account. We see a future where organized crime and corruption are drastically reduced and democracy is strengthened. Our global team includes editors, researchers, data engineers, security specialists, administrators, technologists, and strategists, each with areas of in-depth expertise.

Position Overview

OCCRP is seeking a full or part-time research intern who will be responsible for supporting the research team in tracking down public records to support our partners and projects.

Our research team is the brainpower behind OCCRP ID, a service that helps investigative journalists in the OCCRP network conduct research quickly and effectively. You will be part of a team of expert researchers who use a combination of commercial search engines and databases, as well as publicly available open sources, to help journalists track down people, companies, and assets anywhere in the world.

This is an ideal internship if you are interested in building your skills as an OSINT researcher and would like to understand the process behind hard hitting investigative projects. While this is mostly intended to be a support role, there may be opportunities to conduct more complex research as time goes on.

The internship is intended for 6 months, but can be flexible upon request. A monthly stipend (up to $750 USD for full-time) will be provided.

Team: Research

Job Description

Responsibilities include:

  • Locating and downloading public records from corporate registries around the world
  • Supporting research team administration, including organization of the annual fellowship and creating and maintaining collective research guides
  • Running extensive background checks on people, companies, and their networks
  • Contributing to reports on research findings to be shared with journalists in the OCCRP network
  • Working closely with other members of the research team to respond to research queries
  • Identifying ways to obtain information from new sources and countries

Person Description

Required Skills:

  • Fluency in the English, written and spoken
  • Ability to work well with people from a range of countries, languages and backgrounds, online and in person
  • Ability to express ideas in a clear and concise manner
  • Persistence and curiosity — you should be someone who enjoys looking for needles in a haystack
  • Thoroughness and strong attention to detail
  • Highly organized with ability to efficiently structure information
  • Ability to work independently, while asking for guidance when needed
  • Computer literacy, with experience using Word, Excel, and Google Docs

Desirable Skills:
