Social Justice Day 2017
University of Maryland Stamp Union
April 18, 2017
The campus is holding its first Social Justice Day on Tuesday, April 18, 2017, with the theme:
“Growing Social Justice for the Public Good”
The all-day event will involve faculty, staff and students from the entire College Park campus. In addition to a keynote speaker at 9 a.m., the day will center around two interactive sessions in which participants from all parts of campus will be able to demonstrate the many ways -- through research, teaching, and community involvement -- that the University of Maryland is committed to social justice. The day will end with a conversation, summary, and next steps from the day's interactions (3:30 - 5 p.m.).
This year, the day is being organized around five social justice themes:
WELCOME by President Loh & KEYNOTE SPEAKER 9am:
Dr. Richard Reeves
Senior Fellow, Economic Studies and Co-Director, Center on Children and Families at the Brookings Institution
INTERACTIVE HUBS:
After the keynote speaker, the day is organized around two “interactive hubs.” These hubs offer participants the opportunity to display their Social Justice Day offerings at one of two times:
10:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
or
1:30 p.m. to 3:15 p.m.
Each display will be combined with others around the same theme to stimulate discussion among attendees on a given social justice topic. These are not traditional “poster sessions” in the sense that they will not be “presented,” but “displayed” and form the basis for a thematic discussion amongst those at the session. These themed sessions or “interactive hubs” will be formed by the displays mounted on poster boards in the hub. The goal is to include research, but also to expand to the many social justice-related activities in which the campus community is engaged.
PANEL & AUDIENCE DISCUSSION with Provost Rankin 3:30-5pm:
How to submit your proposed projects for the Interactive Hubs:
The specific proposal guidelines for hub displays are as follows: Displays should be no larger than 4' x 4' as that is the size of the assigned space on the poster board. Given the constraints of the Stamp Union, we cannot accommodate many displays that require electricity. If you MUST have have electricity, please email our logistics coordinator to see if can be accommodated. If you would like to submit a proposal that does not fit within these guidelines (for example, a performance rather than a display), please describe that in your submission and we will make every effort to accommodate your desires.
Please submit your proposals here. Submissions are welcome until April 7 by 4:59 p.m. Submissions will be reviewed the week of April 10. Notification that your proposal has been accepted will be ongoing but no later than April 12. Logistical details (where and when to go on April 18) will be forwarded by April 12.
