INTERNSHIPS WITH THE MATERNAL HEALTH INITIATIVE
The Maternal Health Initiative (MHI) is seeking two paid part-time interns to contribute to the Dot-Mom column of the award-winning blog, New Security Beat; network with leading experts in the maternal health, reproductive health, and gender equity fields; and work closely with the friendly, dynamic maternal health team to develop communications and programmatic skills.
The Wilson Center’s Maternal Health Initiative (MHI) is dedicated to improving the lives of women, adolescents, and children around the world. MHI explores a wide range of policy-related topics, including gender equity, family planning, health systems, workforce participation, communicable and non-communicable diseases, and sexual and reproductive health and rights.
Internships with the Maternal Health Initiative are designed to provide the opportunity for interns to:
- Contribute to the Dot-Mom column of the award-winning blog, New Security Beat
- Network with leading experts in the maternal health, reproductive health, and gender equity fields
- Work closely with the friendly, dynamic MHI team at the Wilson Center
- MHI is currently recruiting for two different part-time paid positions starting Fall 2021. We are looking for candidates who can commit up to 20 hours per week to the internship from September 2021- December 2021, with the possibility of extension to May 2022.
- Deadline for applications submission: Friday, August 27
Research Internship (15-20 hours/week)
Primary responsibilities may include:
- Providing research and writing for New Security Beat and MHI’s website
- Researching maternal and child health, sexual and reproductive health, women in the workforce, and other gender-based issues in support of program-related activities
- Researching and writing policy briefs, publications, and/or outreach materials
- Monitoring and sharing U.S. policies related to programmatic issues
- Assisting the planning and implementation of events and conferences
- Performing administrative assignments in support of MHI activities
How to Apply:

If possible, the writing sample should be non-academic in format, such as a blog post, but can focus on an academic subject such as maternal health. Please indicate your available hours and start/end dates in your application.

Communications Internship (10-15 hours/week)
Primary responsibilities may include:
- Drafting posts to promote events, publications, and content featured on New Security Beat on MHI’s social media accounts (Twitter and Instagram)
- Assisting with external program communications, including drafting, formatting, and proofing program newsletters and event invitations for MHI’s mailing lists
- Assisting the planning and implementation of events and conferences
- Assisting with the production and editing of MHI’s podcast series and developing program-oriented videos
- Producing original media content and actively seeking new ways to advance MHI’s online presence

Requirements
Potential interns should be students, prospective students (within the next year), and/or recent graduates (within the last year) with an interest in, coursework related to, and/or experience working on maternal, child, adolescent, and reproductive health. For the Research Internship: Graduate students pursuing a Master’s in Public Health or related degree is preferred.
In addition, applicants should:
- Possess strong research, writing, and/or administrative skills
- Be detail-oriented
- Be able to work both independently and as part of a group
- Have a strong commitment to maternal and reproductive health and other gender-based issues
- Be creative and innovative!
- For the Communications Internship: Experience with Twitter and Instagram a must; Experience with graphic design and audiovisual tools (Adobe Illustrator and Audition, Canva, InDesign, Audacity and/or Photoshop) is strongly desirable..
The Wilson Center is closely monitoring guidelines established by the CDC and other federal and state authorities surrounding COVID-19. In response, the Wilson Center has moved to a telework schedule until further notice. At this time, MHI is currently offering remote internships with the future possibility of hosting interns in-person, on an ad-hoc basis, in Washington, D.C.
An individual selected for an internship will be expected to present proper evidence establishing his or her eligibility to work in the United States prior to being appointed. The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 requires employers to hire only individuals who are eligible to work in the United States. Please note that we cannot sponsor a visa for you to work in the United States.
International students are eligible, but they must hold a valid F-1 or J-1 visa and appropriate work authorization. All international students must obtain written permission from their Designated School Official (DSO) or Responsible Officer (RO) for visas at their university stating that they are in valid immigration status and eligible to do an internship at the Center.
