The Criminal Law Internship Program (CLIP) is a fast paced, hands-on investigative internship program for undergraduate and graduate students. Investigative Interns spend at least 12 weeks partnering directly with staff attorneys to complete various investigative tasks and advocate for their clients.

This position is located in the Criminal Investigations Division: Homicide/Robbery Unit. The purpose of the Investigative Assistant Intern is to provide direct assistance to the detectives in the Homicide/Robbery Unit, Burglary/Larceny Unit, Special Victims Unit and the General Assignment Unit.

  • Interns will be directly involved interviewing victims and witnesses in a variety of cases such as assaults, threats, missing persons, domestic assaults, larcenies and other property crimes
  • Interns will be provided with orientation and guidance on how to conduct these interviews and work on each case with the assigned detective
  • This internship will acquaint the student with the investigative process by actually being a part of the investigations
  • Interns will conduct interviews, document statements and provide input to the detectives on disposition of cases
  • An intern’s work may lead to identifying suspects to be prosecuted

Interns accepted for this assignment will complete the process with true investigative experience. The intern will develop strategies and make recommendations to the Detective and the intern will work closely with the Detectives throughout the investigative process. The Detectives will involve the intern in all phases of the investigation and treat them as colleagues.

Baltimore Witness is a news site that provides transparency in homicide and non-fatal shooting cases in Baltimore, Md., through hard news reporting.

We are opening applications for our 16-week learning internship. Those accepted will hone their writing, research and data collection skills, all while playing an integral part in providing the community with detailed information on the city’s criminal and legal processes.

Full- and part-time internship positions are open to students and recent graduates interested in pursuing careers in journalism, sociology, public health, data analysis or legal fields.

This is an unpaid internship; however, we offer college credit. Some travel expenses are reimbursed on a sliding scale. Interns are required to work two days a week minimum.

Paid Internship

NOTE: This internship is not Criminal Justice related and not eligible for academic credit. Nevertheless, it is paid, remote, and can help you build some great skillsets!

 Colin Fraser, a past participant of the USG Equity Incubator program, is currently looking for interns to support his organization.

The internship involves data entry tasks, where interns will be responsible for entering data from an Excel spreadsheet into a backend Point of Sales (POS) system. The required skills for this position include proficiency in Microsoft Excel or similar database software, strong typing and transcription skills, attention to detail, and excellent time management and organization skills. The internship is remote and pays $17 per hour.

If you know of any students who may be interested in gaining valuable experience in data entry and possess the necessary skills, please share this opportunity with them. Colin is also seeking interns to help with distributing flyers in various locations.

Who Are We?
The Indigent Defense Commission (IDC) is a State Agency which represents indigent people charged with criminal offenses throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. The IDC has numerous offices throughout the state and they are comprised of state attorneys, mitigation specialists, administrative staff and investigative divisions. Our division works on Fairfax County criminal cases and is located at the Fairfax County Public Defender’s Office (4103 Chain Bridge Road, Fairfax, VA).

What Do Investigators Do?
  • Investigative major crimes
    • Interview clients and witnesses (in jail, the office, or in private homes)
    • Conduct research, review evidence and retrieve records
    • Write detailed investigative reports
    • Attend court proceedings
    • Assist in any additional trial preparation tasks

Investigators assist the state attorneys by gathering facts and evidence that will help them resolve cases. Interns will assist investigators with their caseload, which consists of serious felony cases, including murder, sex crimes, robbery, assault, etc.

Why Might You Be a Good Fit for the Investigator Internship?
  • You have an interest in, and some familiarity with, the Criminal Justice System (through coursework or other practical experience)
  • You are comfortable with conducting field work that brings you out into the community and into people’s homes
  • You are proficient in Spanish, or another foreign language (Bilingual - Spanish speakers highly preferred)
  • Must have availability to work 2 to 3 full days a week and some occasional afterhours work
  • You are a good communicator and will maintain professionalism even when interacting with rude or difficult people
  • You have a positive and willing attitude
This is an actual hands-on professional work experience, unlike most internships!

NRO Cadre Undergraduate and Graduate Student Internship Program

The NRO Cadre Undergraduate and Graduate Student Internship Program provides extraordinary training, mentoring, and career development opportunities for high-achieving undergraduate and graduate students to support the NRO's national space mission. Interns gain real-world experience in a variety of functional areas while working alongside professionals at NRO Headquarters in Chantilly, VA or ground stations located at Fort Belvoir, VA, White Sands Missile Range, NM, and Buckley Air Force Base, CO.  It is a paid, 10-week program from June to August. In addition, there may be opportunities to work during the school year, e.g. winter and spring break, and during subsequent summers based on mission requirements, continued eligibility, and the student's availability. This internship provides the opportunity for students to transition to the NRO Developmental Career Path Program upon graduation.

Applicants Must:

  • Be enrolled in a full-time degree program at an accredited college or university
  • Have a minimum 3.2/4.0 GPA
  • Be able to obtain a TS/SCI security clearance, complete with background investigation and polygraph

POSITION TITLE: Research Investigative Intern
DIVISION/OFFICE: Investigations Division

I. INTRODUCTION
The Military Commission Defense Organization is a group of civilian and military members, attorneys, investigators, analyst, and paralegals who are dedicated to the rule of law and ensuring detainees in Guantanamo Bay have zealous representation. The investigative intern will be assigned to a diverse team of committed human rights professionals.

A trial team at the Military Commission Defense Organization is in search of one or more investigative interns. Interns will experience 8 weeks of partnering directly with members of a defense team to complete various investigative tasks, advocate for a Guantanamo Bay detainee, and assist with establishing a legal precedent for pending sentencing of a military commission case.

The investigative internship at the Military Commissions Defense Organization (MCDO) provides undergraduate and graduate students with the fundamental investigative techniques and the relevant criminal law knowledge needed to assist Attorneys. The Internship begins with a training session that orients the intern to MCDO, case history and team dynamics. In the second week, the Investigative Interns are assigned projects and will be responsible for completion of the investigative tasks assigned. Investigative Interns will be assigned to work with the investigative unit, attorneys, and other members of the team. Interns should expect to work zealously for our client!

II. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Major Duties and Responsibilities)
To perform this job successfully, an intern must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed will be representative of the knowledge, skills, education, training, experience and/or ability required. Persons with disabilities must be able to perform these duties with or without reasonable accommodation(s).
  • Locate and interview witnesses.
    • Under Defense Team supervision and/or with team investigator accompanying.
  • Perform extensive criminal background checks, with the use and assistance of resources provided by MCDO or self.
  • Draft and File Memorandums.
  • Prepare courtroom exhibits.
  • Write reports regarding investigative tasks; assist with case development and generally assist the assigned attorney(s) out of the courtroom.
  • Investigative Interns will be given clerical duties, but some of their work will be performed in the community.

III. AMERICAN DISABILITIES ACT (ADA) REQUIREMENTS: Rare (30%), Occasionally (60%), Frequently (90%), Constantly (100%)
In addition to the essential functions listed above, this position also requires the intern to be able to do the following:
  • Constantly communicate fluently in oral and written English.
  • Constantly communicate effectively with MCDO staff and outside parties over multiple modalities such as phone, e-mail, video conferencing, facsimile, etc.
  • Frequently operate a computer and other office equipment which may require repetitive movements.
  • Frequently create handwritten statements from witnesses and other key stakeholders.
  • Frequently navigate multiple programs both on the MCDO network (such as e-mail, calendar, etc.) as well as shared programs with outside networks.
  • Frequently researches, views, reads, and comprehends laws, regulations, policies, correspondence, etc. and exchange accurate information with defense attorneys, and other stakeholders.
  • Frequently navigate office environment to access file cabinets, drawers, office equipment and machinery, etc.
  • Frequently perform sedentary office work. 
  • Frequently travel via walking, climbing stairs, utilizing public transportation, and/or driving to different sites such as courts, jails, and hospitals to meet with or represent clients, client family members, witnesses, etc.
  • Frequently write notes when interviewing witnesses.
  • Rarely lifts weights up to 30 pounds (i.e. files, boxes, etc.)
The Internship experience we provide is a one of kind legal internship which provides hands on experience. No previous experience required. We offer a learning experience that can both prepare an individual for graduate-level work and provide an individual with the credentials necessary for employment within a field in the federal government.
