We’re Hiring: Apply to The Literacy Lab!

A note from the Literacy Lab...

The Literacy Lab Storytime.png

Do you believe literacy is a human right?

I hope this message finds you well. I'm reaching out on behalf of The Literacy Lab, a local non-profit that places full-time tutors in historically-underserved schools to provide individualized reading instruction to students in pre-k through 3rd grade.

The Literacy Lab is an AmeriCorps partner program supporting schools in the DMV. During their one-year service term, tutors receive training and support, a modest cost-of-living stipend, health insurance, and are eligible for SNAP and childcare benefits if they choose to opt-in. In the DMV, we serve the DC Metro Region, Baltimore, and Greater Richmond.

Students who are interested in education, non-profits, social justice, and/or taking a gap year might find our program to fit well into their post-graduate plans

Our applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, but we encourage college students to take advantage of our online resources while they have some free time during their spring break.

  • They can check out our Literacy Lab website and apply to be a Literacy Lab tutor here.
  • They can hear from a Literacy Lab tutor here and from our students here.

Fall 2021 Registration in Happening Soon. Be prepared!

CCJS@USG Students: Fall 2021 Registration will being on APRIL 14.  More information on the schedule of classes will follow. Some things to keep in mind as you prepare for registration and (hopefully!) in person classes this fall are listed below!

Below are a few tips from CCJS@USG and the BSOS Advising Center to keep in mind while you register for Spring 2021 semester!

Completion of Major Requirements

When planning your schedule, check your student record to make sure you are registering for major requirements that you have not yet completed. Your academic advisor will review these requirements during your advising meeting.  You can also find this information on Testudo by clicking on your student audit.

Registration Blocks

A block is a hold placed on student records to prevent registration. Registration blocks may be frustrating for students who need to register for classes. Therefore, each semester, students are expected to log on to Testudo and check their registration time and blocks (under Appointment and Registration Status). It is the student’s responsibility to take appropriate actions to remove blocks in order to register on time. Please visit the Registration Restrictions and Blocks webpage for explanations of different registration blocks.

Credit Overload

Prior to the First Day of Classes and Schedule Adjustment Period, students are limited to registering for no more than 17 creditsOn the First Day of Classes this limit is raised to 20 credits. Students who wish to exceed these limits must meet with their CCJS@USG advisor to discuss a possible exception to university policy.

Duplicate Credit

This is used to indicate two courses with the same course content. Note: students cannot receive duplicate credit. Be mindful of credit you have received through AP/IB or through transfer from another institution. Also, you can view the Schedule of Classes where courses are marked: "Credit only granted for", to see duplicate courses.

Lead4Life Diversion and Community-Based Programs-Hiring!

Leaders Who Serve with Empathy & Compassion
Lead4Life, Inc. is a community-based organization that utilizes grassroots efforts to assist underserved youth, adults, and families with complex hardships—such as juvenile recidivism, homelessness, the child welfare system, mental health struggles, education and employment barriers, and more.

We’re searching for caring individuals to help our participants on their journey to overcoming significant life obstacles and building strong foundations for success.
Our ERC program provides an uplifting alternative to detention programs in Montgomery and Wicomico Counties—allowing participants to develop positive life, social, and behavioral skills. The Program Manager would be responsible for supervising daily programming to reduce youth being detained and committing a new offense.

JEDI serves first-time youth offenders in Frederick, Maryland. As a restorative practice program, the 90-day agenda consists of community service, substance abuse and mental health screenings, and beneficial resources to prevent participants from moving forward into the juvenile justice system. The Program Coordinator would conduct intakes, follow-up, and resources and referrals, while supervising and coordinating community outreach and service initiatives.

Licensed Master Social Workers (LMSW) & Licensed Graduate Professional Counselors (LGPC)
We are actively seeking to hire LMSWs and LGPCs to provide therapy to youth of color and/or participants who identify as LGBTQ+. Selected individuals would be assisting participants in our Individual & Family Therapy (IFT) program, and meeting one-on-one, in groups, or with families to help them work through challenges and overcome obstacles.

PMI acts as a resource for parents or legal guardians who are responsible for a child in need or are undergoing the reunification process. Through this program, participants can seek support from skilled mentors for guidance at home or as they go through the steps towards reunification. Currently, we are looking for part-time mentors in Worcester County to meet monthly with parents in the PMI program. PMI mentors are responsible for making their own schedule. Access to transportation and Wi-Fi is a must.

PRP serves minors or adults ages 5-65 with serious and persistent mental illnesses. We’re searching for part-time PRP mentors in Frederick County to provide services—in areas such as independent living, housing, employment, social relationships, adaptive equipment and services, and more—to empower individuals to become active members in their community. PRP mentors are responsible for making their own schedule. Access to transportation and Wi-Fi is a must.
