Maryland Internship Program


MIP places highly-qualified UMD undergraduate students in internships throughout Maryland state government. 

These internships provide unique internship experiences for motivated and talented students to work within state government. In addition to exposing interns to the governmental process, the program provides Maryland government leaders with research and other professional staff assistance. For students interested in working at the state legislature while it is in session, fill out this application and Christian Hosam will contact you to fill out another form required by the legislature. If you are accepted, you will be placed with an internship by Jane Hudiburg, the State Legislature Internship Coordinator.

Research Assistantship with Urban Institute for December or Recent Grad


Overview

The nonprofit Urban Institute is dedicated to elevating the debate on social and economic policy.

W
ithin the Urban Institute, the Policy Advisory Group (PAG) is a team of policy analysts focused on accelerating the development and use of actionable knowledge to shape and inform the policy challenges facing urban America. PAG works to address a fundamental challenge for stakeholders aiming to improve outcomes for urban areas: how to bridge the gap between research and policy.

The Policy Advisory Group seeks a dynamic and highly motivated individual to work as a Research Assistant to support research and policy analysis projects related to a variety of urban policy topics.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will support the Senior Management in the Policy Advisory Group and other research staff with background research on a range of topics by collecting and analyzing both quantitative and qualitative information; producing PowerPoint presentations and various forms of data visualization, including tables, maps, and graphics for reports; contributing to other products that translate research for policy and practice. Research and policy topics could include pay for success, assisted housing policy, community development, economic development, and other urban policy topics.
Other tasks may include: planning and preparation for substantive interactions with researchers and policymakers; providing background support for drafting letters, emails, memos, presentations, talking points for internal and external audiences; supporting researchers preparing written products such as literature reviews, op-eds, reports, policy briefs, blog posts and social media; and support for scheduling onsite and offsite meetings.
This individual will need to exercise judgment on priority of tasks, meetings, incoming materials for review, pending decisions as well as handle confidential and non-routine information/matters.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree required, preferably in the field of Public Policy, Urban Studies, Political Science, or other social science field. The successful candidate must have outstanding writing ability and be well-organized, highly motivated, and able to work effectively on multiple projects at once. Prior work experience or public policy related internship experience in fast-paced office environments is preferable and with federal, state, local policymakers, philanthropic and/or non-profits leaders is a plus. Should have a strong interest in one or more of the following topics: low-income and affordable housing, evidence-based policymaking, neighborhood revitalization, local government, housing as a platform, economic development, inclusive communities, and federal policy and systems. Facility with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, mobile technology, and social media tools is essential.

Thanksgiving Break begins on Wednesday, November 23rd



There are no classes on Wednesday, November 23rd. The CCJS offices at USG will be closed but staff will be available by email. The University of Maryland (and USG) will be closed for the Thanksgiving Break on Thursday, November 24th and Friday, November 25th

Family Justice Center Legal Intern - Spring 2017


The Montgomery County Family Justice Center (FJC) Internship Program provides interns with a unique opportunity to learn about domestic violence intervention on a direct service level. The FJC Legal Intern will assist the attorneys and legal advocates housed at the Center, this includes, Catholic Charities, DVS Legal Services, and House of Ruth Maryland. 

Duties
The FJC Intern will assist in the following duties:
•Maintain legal services referral database and review protective orders
•Conduct outreach calls with FJC clients for possible representation
•Maintain the legal appointment book
•Coordinating between outside partners for legal representation for FJC clients
•Covering the FJC reception desk
•Covering the FJC intake desk
•Other duties as assigned

Applicant Requirements: 
•Must be 18 years of age
•Highly organized and motivated
•Must be currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate school
•Complete and submit an Internship Application
•Submit a resume
•Agree to an interview (if selected for an interview)
•Successfully complete a background check application (if selected for the position)
•Available 8:30 AM – 12:30 PM, three (3) to five (5) days per week (Mon-Fri)**

Preferred Qualifications (not required): 

•Bilingual (Spanish/English)
•Experience or interest in the following areas: domestic violence, pre-law/law, political science, and/or criminal justice
