Apply for the Maryland Internship Program!
The Maryland Internship Program is designed for students looking
to supplement their academic course work with real-world experience in
Maryland politics. MIP places 20 to 30 highly-qualified UMD undergraduate
students in internships throughout Maryland state government. These
internships provide unique internship experiences for motivated and talented
students to work within state government. In addition to exposing interns to
the governmental process, the program provides Maryland government leaders
with research and other professional staff assistance. CAPC has already received
a number of internship placement requests from Maryland state and local
agencies, but strongly encourages students to think about and research
offices that closely match their personal interests. This helps to ensure the
student and the office receive the best possible experience.

Apply by Thursday to Study Human Trafficking in Thailand Winter 2016!
Human trafficking,
while not widely understood, ranks among the most severe and lucrative of
criminal enterprises around the world. During this course, you will be
exposed to the consequences of and reactions to human trafficking in an
international context, specifically in Thailand. You will spend your time in
the Northern region of the country, visiting both Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai.
Highlights of the two-week trip will include cultural excursions, speaking
engagements with knowledgeable people on the state of human trafficking in
Thailand, and volunteer work at the Development and Education Programme for
Daughters and Communities Centre, an NGO that works primarily to prevent and
to protect children and youth from being trafficked into exploitative labour
conditions. Through these activities, you will gain exposure to and an
understanding of human trafficking in a way that is not possible in the
United States.
If you are interested in the topics of criminal
justice, comparative justice, human rights, child exploitation, and victim
advocacy, you will likely find this experience enlightening. Additionally,
those interested in law enforcement, other first responder capacities, or
with at-risk populations, will especially benefit from this experience - as a
major challenge in the United States is recognizing the signs of trafficking
and identifying victims. This unique first-hand experience will provide you
with cues to aid in the recognition of these types of crimes.
Students participating in this course will travel to Thailand
after completing preliminary readings, online discussions, and a
pre-departure orientation. Once in Thailand opportunities will be
available for cultural exploration; however the main focus of the trip will
be to volunteer at the Development and Education Programme for Daughters and
Communities Centre in the Greater Mekong Subregion (DEPDC/GMS). This
non-profit, non-governmental organization provides education, vocational and
life skills trainings, and outreach and leadership development in the
northern region of Thailand. Through the volunteer work students will
gain an understanding of what trafficking looks like in Thailand. I
expect this experience to be eye-opening, not only to see the committed work
of the NGO but also the devastating consequences of various forms of
trafficking in this country.

Spring 2016
Internships with the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and
Responses to Terrorism (START)
DESCRIPTION
START offers unpaid internships year round on
a variety of research projects and teams. During the course of their
internship, participants are exposed to the most up-to-date theories, methods
and information related to the study of terrorism. They are versed in the
critical questions tackled by homeland security practitioners, policy makers
and researchers, and are mentored in a professional environment geared toward
student success. The program is designed to prepare the next generation of
homeland security scholars and practitioners through real-world research
experience.
START’s internship program is open to undergraduate and graduate students (as well as some recent graduates) in any related discipline from any institution. Each internship lasts for one term. Participants work at least 10 hours/week during the fall and spring semesters and 20 hours/week during the summer. Our internships can be undertaken for academic credit, and this is highly encouraged. Interns participate in a program of enrichment and career development opportunities. All interns are required to work onsite with their research project staff. Because interns work directly with our researchers and staff on current research projects, the internship positions vary depending on our research portfolio. See project descriptions for more details.) Final Application Deadline: November 13, 2015 Mandatory Intern Orientation: January 21-22, 2016 Final Day of Program: May 6, 2016 Questions?
