Human trafficking,
while not widely understood, ranks among the most severe and lucrative of
criminal enterprises around the world. During this course, you will be
exposed to the consequences of and reactions to human trafficking in an
international context, specifically in Thailand. You will spend your time in
the Northern region of the country, visiting both Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai.
Highlights of the two-week trip will include cultural excursions, speaking
engagements with knowledgeable people on the state of human trafficking in
Thailand, and volunteer work at the Development and Education Programme for
Daughters and Communities Centre, an NGO that works primarily to prevent and
to protect children and youth from being trafficked into exploitative labour
conditions. Through these activities, you will gain exposure to and an
understanding of human trafficking in a way that is not possible in the
United States.
If you are interested in the topics of criminal
justice, comparative justice, human rights, child exploitation, and victim
advocacy, you will likely find this experience enlightening. Additionally,
those interested in law enforcement, other first responder capacities, or
with at-risk populations, will especially benefit from this experience - as a
major challenge in the United States is recognizing the signs of trafficking
and identifying victims. This unique first-hand experience will provide you
with cues to aid in the recognition of these types of crimes.
Students participating in this course will travel to Thailand
after completing preliminary readings, online discussions, and a
pre-departure orientation. Once in Thailand opportunities will be
available for cultural exploration; however the main focus of the trip will
be to volunteer at the Development and Education Programme for Daughters and
Communities Centre in the Greater Mekong Subregion (DEPDC/GMS). This
non-profit, non-governmental organization provides education, vocational and
life skills trainings, and outreach and leadership development in the
northern region of Thailand. Through the volunteer work students will
gain an understanding of what trafficking looks like in Thailand. I
expect this experience to be eye-opening, not only to see the committed work
of the NGO but also the devastating consequences of various forms of
trafficking in this country.
