The United Nations Foundation links the UN’s work with others around the world, mobilizing the energy and expertise of business and non-governmental organizations to help the UN tackle issues including climate change, global health, peace and security, women's empowerment, poverty eradication, energy access, and U.S.-UN relations.
DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
Addressing the needs and rights of women and girls across the globe is essential to alleviating poverty, achieving social justice, and accelerating progress on all of our global development goals.
The UN Foundation believes that empowering women and girls with educational and economic opportunities and securing their health and human rights is one of the best investments we can make for families, communities, and the world. We work with the UN and our NGO, corporate and government partners to promote gender equality; advance sexual and reproductive health and rights (including family planning); advocate for increased resources and funding for programs and activities benefitting adolescent girls; eliminate gender-based violence; combat climate change; and improve maternal health care using integrated health systems and mobile technology.
The Girl’s and Women team’s core priorities currently address:
- Supporting the UN’s efforts to improve the lives of girls and women;
- The sexual and reproductive health and rights of girls and women;
- Gender data;
- The needs and rights of adolescent girls; and
- Women’s economic empowerment.
Responsibilities: Although specific projects of the Women, Girls & Population Intern will depend on initiatives within the office of placement during the intern’s appointment, the following list provides an idea of the scope and breadth of the intern's work at UNF.
- Support the development of relevant materials including briefing papers, memos, executive summaries, databases, and presentations for various projects.
- Experience creating graphics and graphs
- Must be comfortable with different social networks, and blogging
- Assist in research on relevant women and girl’s issues.
- Learn administrative and operational aspects of team functionality in a fast-paced work environment, including: financial reporting, team logistical organization and programmatic execution.
- Learn about United Nations agencies and other partners that are involved in implementation on women and girl programming.
- Help to plan and run events and panels
Selection Criteria:
- Candidate must be enrolled in a degree-granting program during the internship or must be a recent graduate (within 8 months of graduation) of a college or university with a demonstrated interest in the UN and international development.
- 20 hours per week is required for the internship, more is preferred.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Ability to take initiative and be a self-starter.
- Background/coursework in international development and/or women’s empowerment preferred.
- Candidate must have demonstrated record of commitment to work and completion of tasks by deadlines, with significant attention to detail.
- Candidate should have strong analytical, writing, and editing skills in English for diverse audiences.
- Team player a must.
