Associate, Arms Division/Refugee Rights Program

The Arms Division and Refugee Rights Program of Human Rights Watch ("HRW") are seeking an Associate to provide administrative support to both teams. The Associate will be based in the Washington, DC office and will spend 67% of his or her time in support of the Arms Division and 33% in support of the Refugee Rights Program. This position reports to the Executive Director of the Arms Division and the Director of the Refugee Rights Program. The Arms Division and the Refugee Rights Program are part of the Program Office. The Program Office consists of regional and thematic divisions and oversees the organization's research, reporting and various other work. The Arms Division works to ban or regulate weapons of humanitarian concern and to promote compliance with international humanitarian law by all combatants during armed conflict. The Refugee Rights Program concentrates on the protection needs and basic rights of refugees, asylum seekers, and internally displaced people worldwide, most fundamentally the right not to be forcibly returned to persecution or torture. 
Responsibilities:
  1. Providing day-to-day administrative support to staff, such as scheduling, making travel arrangements, preparing for and taking minutes at meetings, creating and maintaining extensive filing and archiving systems, and responding to requests for information;
  2. Maintaining communication between HRW offices, global staff, and external partners;
  3. Preparing, drafting, editing, formatting and distributing materials such as news releases, reports, tables, charts, briefing papers, op‑eds, publications, and web content;
  4. Assisting with research, electronic clippings, wires, and translations;
  5. Assisting with the Landmine and Cluster Munition Monitor, including drafting letters and reports and creating factsheets;
  6. Assisting with the Campaign to Stop Killer Robots by maintaining a database of media and advocacy targets, drafting correspondence and distributing advocacy materials, and coordinating the campaign's activities with external partners;
  7. Assisting with events such as news conferences, staff meetings, and special events;
  8. Assisting with the recruitment, supervision and mentoring of interns;
  9. Recording, tracking, and processing divisional finances; and
  10. Carrying out other duties as required.

Qualifications

Education: A bachelor's degree in human rights, international relations, social science, or a related field is required.
Experience: A minimum of one year of relevant work experience is required.
Related Skills and Knowledge:
  1. Prior office/administration experience and strong organizational skills are required.
  2. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are required.
  3. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well under pressure while juggling multiple tasks simultaneously are required.
  4. Ability to make sound decisions consistent with functions is required.
  5. Ability to prioritize with minimal supervision and work independently as well as function as a member of a team with staff in multiple locations globally is required.
  6. Proficiency in computer packages including MS Office applications is required.
  7. Strong interest in international human rights is desirable.
