Internships with the International Rescue Committee



Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) is a leading non-sectarian, voluntary organization providing relief, protection, and resettlement services for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. The Suburban Washington Refugee Center, where the IRC’s Silver Spring resettlement office is located, has resettled more than 2,000 new refugee arrivals, providing them a fresh start and opportunities to use their greatest resources—their motivation, their skills and their experiences—to become independent and self-sufficient new Americans. Currently, the IRC Silver Spring resettles and/or provides assistance to over 700 refugees and asylees each year.

ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT INTERNSHIP
The Economic Empowerment program assists refugees to become economically self-sufficient. The team provides early employment and career development services. Early employment places recently arrived refugees in their first job. The intern will work closely with the Economic Empowerment team, promoting client self-sufficiency.

Responsibilities:
Work directly with IRC Employment Specialist s to implement and monitor performance of the Economic Empowerment Program
Work with employment specialists to develop employment opportunities appropriate for IRC client through research and targeted outreach
Provide direct services to refugee clients including creating resumes, cover letters and job applications
Provide group and individual trainings aimed at successful workforce integration
Accompany clients to job preparation activities and interviews, coaching clients so they can attend these events independently in the future
Support the economic empowerment team in creating career path documents that will guide future refugees with a specific career objective

ANTI-TRAFFICKING INTERNSHIP
The Anti-Trafficking program provides trauma-informed and client-centered services to assist victims of trafficking. Services include meeting clients’ basic needs, ensuring clients’ safety and access to temporary and long term shelter as needed. Also, the program refers clients to pro bono legal services, mental health specialists and economic empowerment activities as needed.


RESPONSIBILITIESAssess clients’ needs and priorities and work with each client to create an individual service plan
Assist the Anti-Trafficking caseworker in managing clients’ cases and maintaining case files
Guide clients to various appointments including but not limited to: appointment with lawyers, law enforcement and medical appointments
Engage in community mapping to identify and refer client to resources
Advocate in the field for clients’ access to public services
Engage in outreach activities to increase visibility of the program in the community
