START seeks a highly motivated individual to coordinate outreach activities and transition products that highlight the research, data and analysis conducted by the center for a variety of audiences including practitioners, policymakers and the general public. Reporting to the Director of Outreach and Transition and supporting the internal and external communications efforts of START, the incumbent will be responsible for planning and executing START events (in coordination with the Experiential Education Specialist) and assisting the Director in managing the website, publications, metric reporting and marketing.
Specific duties and responsibilities include:
- Planning, attending and supporting external outreach events including conferences, symposia, webinars, book talks, lectures; and conducting the logistical preparation for these events, including marketing and communications to generate attendance;
- Coordinating with START staff to help plan and prepare for briefings for key stakeholder groups and other important delegations;
- Working with the Experiential Education Specialist to create an enrichment program each semester for START interns and students that supports research efforts;
- Supporting the Director of Outreach and Transition in research transition efforts including:
- Producing research briefs and training materials based on longer research reports and journal articles;
- Managing the website and monthly newsletter;
- Writing stories for the website;
- Monitoring social media;
- Helping to supervise interns;
- Preparing metric reports;
- Maintaining an internal project database; and
- Other duties as assigned.
In addition, the candidate must possess high level of customer service and be responsive to customers, faculty and students, and be able to assist with visitors to START.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree with minimum of two years of professional experience at a research or academic institution;
- Very strong interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills, analytical and problem solving abilities and attention to detail;
- Excellent multitasking and organizational abilities in order to operate under pressure and meet deadlines within a dynamic environment with multiple, and at times, conflicting priorities and personalities;
- Proficiency using a web content management system such as Drupal or Joomla;
- Proficiency using Microsoft Excel spreadsheets; and,
- Experience in a customer service role.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree in Communications/Public Relations or a field related to terrorism studies (including psychology, criminology, sociology, etc.).
- Experience working on research projects, specifically in the area of terrorism and counterterrorism;
- Experience working with Sharepoint, AirTable or other online data and file management software; and,
- Knowledge of the terrorism and counterterrorism field.

Salary:The annual salary for this position will be in the range of $40,000-$45,000 (depending on education and experience), plus full University of Maryland benefits (as explained at
