WINTER/SPRING 2021 LEGAL INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY

The Equality Division of the National ACLU National Political Advocacy Department has an opening for an AMEMSA (Arab, Middle Eastern, Muslim, and South Asian) Legal Internship in Washington, DC.

With nearly two million members, activists, and supporters, the ACLU is a nationwide organization that fights tirelessly in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and Washington, D.C., for the principle that every individual's rights must be protected equally under the law, regardless of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, disability, national origin, and record of arrest or conviction.

INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW

Interns will work on a variety of issues including immigrants' rights, racial justice, economic justice, and indigenous rights. Working closely with the Equality Division, interns will assist in all aspects of legislative, campaign, and policy advocacy.

• Time Commitment: The internship requires a full-time or part-time commitment of 10, 15, 20 or 35 hours per week.
• Internship Duration: Internships are a 10-week period (full-time) or 12-week period (part-time). Winter/Spring interns are expected to start in January.
• Stipend: A stipend is available for those students who do not receive course credit. 

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Interns will gain valuable experience by working with the team on a wide variety of issues. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Conducting legal and policy research.
• Supporting research and drafting materials for public education.
• Drafting memoranda and testimony for Congressional hearings.
• Researching the civil liberties implications of legislative proposals and tracking legislation.
• Attending hearings and preparing written reports.
• Attending coalition meetings as necessary, as well as liaising with partners and ACLU affiliates.
• Researching and drafting issue statements and blogs for posting on the ACLU's web page, newsletters and/or action alerts.
• Other duties as assigned

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

Interns should possess the following:

• Excellent research, writing, analytical, and communication skills.
• The ability to work independently and to see projects through to completion.
• A commitment to civil liberties and demonstrated interest in immigrants' rights, racial justice, economic justice, and/or indigenous rights advocacy
• A commitment to civil liberties, civil rights, and social justice.
• Commitment to the mission of the ACLU
