Special Assistant/Executive Assistant Position for May or Recent Grad with Refugees International

Position description

Refugees International (RI) seeks a Special Assistant/Executive Assistant to support the RI President. The position is for a one-year term, which may be renewable. RI strongly encourages applications from candidates with diverse backgrounds and experiences.
For nearly 40 years, RI has served as an advocacy organization on behalf of the rights of refugees and displaced persons, and in support of the principles of international humanitarianism. Based on reporting that results from fact-finding missions around the world, RI seeks to educate and influence the U.S. Administration and members of Congress, other governments, regional and international organizations like the European Union and the United Nations, and the general public. RI seeks to fill the Special Assistant/Executive Assistant position as soon as possible.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide executive-level support to the President.
  • Manage the President’s calendar by scheduling his involvement in meetings, conference calls and other appointments; arrange travel and accommodations as required.
  • Identify priorities for the President’s attention and handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Manage information flow to the President, processing correspondence and screening and responding to phone calls on behalf of the President and the organization.
  • Conduct research as needed on regional and functional issues relating to humanitarianism and human rights.
  • Assist and advise the President in his preparation of statements, articles, blog posts, etc.
  • Represent the President and the organization with outside stakeholders engaging with the office of the President, with an ability to articulate the mission and perspectives of RI.
  • Assist the President with administrative tasks, including expense reimbursements, monthly credit card reconciliation, copying, faxing, mass mailings, filing, data entry and ordering supplies.
  • Record and disseminate minutes from all-staff and management team meetings.
  • Participate in staff searches in order to represent the President’s interests throughout the selection process.
  • Arrange logistics for conferences, meetings, and other events, and assist members of the management team with setting up calls/meetings and other administrative tasks.
  • Set up board committee calls and organize both of RI’s regular in-person board meetings.
  • Prepare and proofread letters and other kinds of correspondence.
  • Travel as needed on missions and for events that involve the President (when circumstances permit).
  • Identify important issues within or outside the organization and bring them to the attention of the President.

Qualifications

The successful applicant must have a bachelor’s degree; a commitment to the mission of RI; excellent writing and editing skills; an ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and discretion and to maintain a courteous and professional manner at all times; strong attention to detail; flexibility and ability to multi task; excellent interpersonal, communication, organizational, and relationship-building skills; an ability to work independently; a strong work ethic; and an ability to manage both paper and electronic files.  This position requires the exercise of discretion and independent judgment and directly affects the general operations of RI.  Accordingly, the applicant is expected to be able to make decisions affecting the priorities of the President and the organization with minimal oversight or supervision.  Because the responsibilities are so varied, prior relevant administrative, research and engagement experiences are desirable.
Salary: $35,000 to $50,000 depending on background and experience.

Application instructions

Applications should include a cover letter and resume. In the subject line, type Special Assistant/Executive Assistant and your family name.
We will begin reviewing applications immediately, and hope to fill the position by July 13. For best consideration, apply by June 15.  To apply please send an email to: jobs@refugeesinternational.org

In community and solidarity

May 31, 2020
Dear University of Maryland community,
We are grieving the killing of George Floyd, McKinsley Lincoln, Tony McDade, Breonna Taylor, Nina Pop, and Ahmaud Arbery, and all who came before.
We are deeply concerned about insufficient police accountability across the country, systemic racism, and the social, economic, and health inequities that have led to protests born of despair, anger, and hope. We support the many peaceful demonstrations for justice across the United States.
We acknowledge that we have our own painful history at UMD, which includes the tragic murder of Lt. Richard Collins III.
The University System of Maryland (USM) chancellor and all the presidents of USM institutions recently stated publicly: "We acknowledge with one voice the structural racism that’s taking the lives of our fellow citizens, and we stand in solidarity as we speak out against racism, anti-Semitism, sexism, discrimination against our LGBTQ+ and immigrant communities, religious intolerance, and bigotry of any kind."
Our University must be even more committed to creating a more inclusive, respectful, and supportive environment, and follow-up with actions that will help shape a more just and equitable campus community and society.
We would like to inform students, staff, and faculty of the following campus opportunities, and invite your participation as a step towards taking action:
  • If you are interested in being in community with others, to process the pain, exhaustion, and fear, email the Office of Diversity and Inclusion at DiverseTerps@umd.edu.
  • If you seek individual support, email Dr. Chetan Joshi, director of the Counseling Center, at cajoshi@umd.edu.
  • If you seek spiritual support, email Campus Chaplain Holly Ulmer at ulmer@umd.edu and she will connect you to other campus chaplains as needed.
  • If you are interested in reading White Fragility or Me & White Supremacy, and discussing it with members of the community and leaders from embraceRace@umd, email Student Affairs at vpsa@umd.edu.
  • If you are interested in working with your leadership team, unit, department or division to strengthen cultural competency, and engage in doing the work, email Dr. Carlton Green, director of Diversity Training and Education, at cegreen@umd.edu.
  • If you want to connect with and/or receive support from leaders within our Nyumburu Center, email director Dr. Ron Ziegler at nyumbz@umd.edu.
  • If you are a member of a cultural student organization, and want to be in community with others, email Brandon Dula, assistant director of Multicultural Involvement and Community Advocacy (MICA) at bdula@umd.edu.
  • If you have concerns or questions about current policies that could negatively impact you and members of your community, email Dr. Andrea Goodwin, director of Student Conduct, at agoodwin@umd.edu.
  • If you would like to know more about our University of Maryland Police Department and its policies and protocols, email Chief David Mitchell at UMPDchief@umpd.umd.edu.
  • If you are interested in organizing other efforts that help our University become more of what it professes and aspires to be, email any of us your ideas and we will help you organize and connect with others.
In community and solidarity,
Dan Alpert, Student Government Association, President

Annie Rappeport, Graduate Student Government, President

Laura Dugan, University Senate, Chair

Wallace D. Loh, President
