Fall 2023 Criminal Justice Strategies Intern

The Governor’s Office of Crime Prevention, Youth, and Victim Services (GOCPYVS) seeks a Criminal Justice Program intern for the Fall 2023 Semester in our Criminal Justice division. You will work alongside the Assistant Director of Public Safety Strategies and collaborate with various internal/external stakeholders to include local, state/federal law enforcement agencies, state’s attorney’s offices, heroin coordinators, and others involved in the implementation of Public Safety Strategies.

Primary functions of this position will include operationally supporting the Maryland Criminal Intelligence Network (MCIN) initiative. MCIN is a criminal justice strategy, coordinated at the local, state, and federal levels targeting gangs, drugs, firearms and human trafficking. MCIN is particularly focused on those criminal networks that are impacting multiple jurisdictions and accomplishes this by sharing information across borders. It is a key element of Maryland’s public safety strategy and provides the basis for data-driven decision making both operationally and for policy development.

Working in the implementation and operations of the P.R.O.T.E.C.T. (Public Resources Organizing to End Crime Together) Program. The Program is designed to maximize the use of State, local, and community resources to combat neighborhood decline throughout the State, and support comprehensive strategies to reduce crime and fear in those communities.

Through the P.R.O.T.E.C.T. Program coordinators connect members of the community to available services and benefits, help improve community projects, and participate in the development of various community enhancement programs. In collaboration with the local law enforcement agency with jurisdiction in the high-crime micro-zone, coordinators will:

• Ensure utilization of all existing crime prevention programs and grants;
• Coordinate community and youth programs;
• Assist with community mobilization and activities to reclaim public space;
• Assist with rapid response to public nuisances; and
• Coordinate community engagement with the local law enforcement agency with jurisdiction in the high-crime micro-zone.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Assist with preparation and planning of regular meetings, which include monthly MCIN and Heroin Coordinator meetings. Identify breaking cases that support the positive impact of the MCIN program (30%)
• Assist in the implementation of P.R.O.T.E.C.T. (Public Resources Organizing to End Crime Together) Program. (30 %)
• Support research and development of reports. (30%)
• Other tasks as assigned (10%)

The successful candidate will:

• Be enrolled as a Junior or higher standing student in a Criminal Justice, social sciences, or a related field. A minimum of 60 credits is required to be considered for the internship position.
• Possess a demonstrated interest in criminal justice-related subjects including law enforcement , prosecution, or courts.
• Have a strong desire to engage and learn about the criminal justice system.
• Possess excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Have experience working with government officials and stakeholders.
• Be detail-oriented.
• Have strong organizational skills.
• Ability to work as a team player

Program Highlights:

• Program Dates: September 2023-December 2023, up to 30 hours per week
• This 12-week program provides students interested in criminal justice with rewarding and substantive work assignments that contribute to the mission of the GOCPYVS to improve public safety in Maryland.
• This program provides an opportunity to network with professionals from the Governor’s Office of Crime Prevention, Youth, and Victim Services, the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, Department of Health, Administrative Office of the Courts, Maryland State Commission on Criminal Sentencing Policy, local corrections, and other agencies and others who will support professional growth and career interests.
• Learned outcomes or skills learned throughout this program include developing work habits and attitudes necessary for career success in the criminal justice field; receiving informal feedback and mentoring from the Assistant Director of Public Safety Strategies; developing communication, interpersonal, and other critical skills necessary for success in the workforce; and building a record of professional work experience in the public sector.
