Protection, Research Humanitarian Policy and Practice Team

About the Project: InterAction’s Protection Team has multiple ongoing workstreams focused on different aspects of protection. Since 2012, InterAction has been at the forefront of shaping and promoting the use of results-based approaches to protection in humanitarian crises. In addition, InterAction’s Protection team devotes significant attention to the Protection of Civilians and International Humanitarian Law (PoC/IHL) in armed conflict, notably in relation to the conduct of U.S. military forces and other State and non-state armed actors towards civilians. InterAction’s Protection Team is seeking applications for Fall 2020 internship position(s). A stipend of $1,000 will be provided to full-time interns completing the internship (pro-rated for part-time). Position Description: The Intern–Protection, Research will gain valuable insight into the humanitarian sector by working directly with InterAction’s Protection team. Overall responsibilities will include research on protection concerns in specific country crises, tracking of key policy issues, and monitoring and evaluation methodologies, including producing summary notes for external disseminations and internal use. The Intern will also provide general administrative and logistical support for meetings and large-scale events. Interns will be encouraged to participate regularly in both internal and external meetings. The specific work of the Intern will also be based upon the individual’s learning and professional goals, as tied to the initiatives of InterAction’s Protection Team within the larger Humanitarian Policy & Practice (HPP) Team. Essential Functions: • Complete background research or literature review on protection issues related to the Protection Team’s various workstreams. Tentative research topics include monitoring and evaluation methodologies and country-specific research on contexts such as Libya, Iraq, and/or Nigeria; • Monitor key policy developments related to the PoC in armed conflict and IHL, in the U.S. policy context and beyond, as well as country- and region-specific PoC and IHL issues of concern, including with regard to U.S. security assistance; • Support the production of bi-monthly news updates, including policy and field developments to be shared out to InterAction members and partners; • Provide administrative and logistical support for meetings and large-scale events, including drafting minutes of the proceedings and helping organize and synthesize material; • Support other project deliverables as needed by the Protection team’s workstreams; • Participate in various fora as needed; • Debrief the team at the internship’s conclusion on learning and/or a work task completed. Additional Opportunities: An intern can expect to gain the following experiences beyond daily work duties through: • Participation in InterAction working group meetings–access to meetings of members and InterAction staff on a variety of current issues within the humanitarian assistance field; • On-the-job learning about the humanitarian architecture, advocacy, policy, and operations; • Access to senior-level staff members at InterAction for informational interviews; • Informal networking with InterAction staff members and individuals from more than 180 member organizations. Learning Objectives: • Demonstrate knowledge of technical, thematic, regional, and/or policy issues related to the work of the Protection Team in humanitarian contexts; • Understand the linkages between international policy and programming in the humanitarian field; • Demonstrate understanding of concepts of IHL and other relevant legal frameworks related to the POC and civilian harm concerns; • Understand core elements of the global humanitarian architecture, including the roles of the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC), UN, and NGO community; • Gain experience working in a professional and collaborative team environment; • Develop research, analytical, communication, writing, and task/time management skills. Requirements: • College junior, senior, graduate student, or recent graduate student in a related field; • Ability to quickly grasp complex concepts; • Strong organizational and written communication skills; • Strong research experience; experience conducting desk research is highly desirable; • Strong analytical skills and ability to convey information clearly; • Experience generating graphs and charts to communicate data and information; • Excellent attention to detail; • Ability to manage multiple tasks; • Flexibility to meet changing deadlines and priorities; • Familiarity with survey tools, such as Survey Monkey and Google Forms is desirable; • Positive attitude, proactive, and curious; motivation to learn and contribute relevant skills and expertise to InterAction’s Protection workstreams; • Ability to work with minimal supervision; • Strong interest, familiarity, and/or coursework in international humanitarian assistance, human rights, and/or humanitarian law is strongly preferred. • Interest, familiarity and/or coursework in U.S. foreign policy, international security, conflict resolution, and/or related field is desirable. Expected Start Date: The internship will range between 20 to 40 hours per week. A typical fall internship runs from September–December but start and end dates are flexible. Gender Based Violence (GBV) and Prevention of Sexual Exploitation

About the Project: InterAction’s Protection Team has multiple ongoing workstreams focused on different aspects of protection. One workstream is member focused working groups which provide a space for organizations to convene, share learning and collectively organize around advocacy initiatives. InterAction hosts two thematic working groups, the GBV and Protection Working Groups and the PSEA Community of Practice (CoP). InterAction has been at the forefront of shaping and promoting the use of results-based approaches to protection since 2012. The current iteration of InterAction’s Results-Based Protection (RBP) project includes two main components: (1) providing field support for collective strategies in select crisis contexts, including Nigeria and others; and (2) the development a results-based evaluation framework for the prevention of gender-based violence (GBV). InterAction’s Protection Team is seeking applications for Fall 2020 internship position(s) to be based remotely. A stipend of $1,000 will be provided to full-time interns completing the internship (pro-rated for part-time). Description: The Intern–GBV and PSEA will gain valuable insight into the humanitarian sector by working directly with InterAction’s Protection team. Additionally, the intern will provide support to the RBP workstream. The intern will also provide general administrative and logistical support for meetings and large-scale events. Interns will be encouraged to participate regularly in both internal and external meetings. The specific work of the Intern will also be based upon the individual’s learning and professional goals, as tied to the initiatives of InterAction’s Protection Team within the larger Humanitarian Policy & Practice (HPP) Team. Essential Functions: • Lead on compiling member feedback, and provide administrative support to organize member meetings and roundtable discussions with country based colleagues as part of the update and upgrade of the InterAction PSEA training materials; • Contribute to the GBV WG research initiative to look at effectiveness of Covid-19 program adaptations – specifically to work with the Program Manager to organize meetings with members, and consultations with country based colleagues as well as contribute to an initial desk review; • Develop newsletters and RBP digests in collaboration with the team, including seeking out relevant resources online, drafting/editing blog posts, etc.; • Provide administrative support such as back-up note taking in WG meetings, logistics support for thematic briefings/consultations/webinars on mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) or on timely member reports (or other topics as identified); • Support other project deliverables as needed by the Protection team’s workstreams; • Participate in various fora as needed; • Debrief the team at the internship’s conclusion on learning and/or a work task completed. Membership and Public Engagement Intern

InterAction’s Membership and Public Engagement (MPE) Team is seeking applications for a full-time remote internship position for Fall 2020. A stipend of $1000 will be provided to full-time interns completing the internship (pro-rated for part-time) along with class credits and a robust professional development program which includes workshops, trainings, and educational opportunities. We anticipate the internship lasting from September through mid-December with flexible start and end dates. Primary Responsibilities The specific work of the intern will be based upon an individual’s learning and professional goals, as tied to the initiatives of InterAction’s MPE Team. Additional responsibilities may include: • Data collection and analysis (e.g., membership, dues structures, NGO sponsor/corporate policies, survey results, etc.) • Research support on membership retention and event engagement • 2020 membership dues process • Assisting with the re-planning of Forum 2020 (contingent on COVID-19 status) • Assisting with administrative tasks (ex. data/list clean-up and maintenance) the From Pledge to Action portfolio, as needed. Learning Objectives: • Gain experience in Member and public outreach and follow up; • Gain experience in problem-solving and identifying creative solutions to institutional challenges; • Gain experience working in a professional, collaborative team environment; • Develop communication, writing, and task/time management skills. Qualifications: • Bachelor’s or higher in international relations, international development, event planning, communications, or another related field; • Able to commit to at least 4 days a week of work (32 hours per week), with preference for those who can work full time (40 hours per week); • Solid writing, editing, and research skills with strong attention to detail and ability to write quickly and effectively; • Familiarity with basic data analysis and methods; • Ability to take in a substantial amount of information, potentially on topics the intern is unfamiliar with, and synthesize that information into a digestible format; • Self-starter and self-motivated; • Fluency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, etc.), Adobe, additional computer skills in Salesforce or related computer programs a plus; • Strong organizational skills including strong office/clerical skills and experience; • Commitment to teamwork, good interpersonal skills, can-do positive attitude, and professional etiquette.
