Interested in gaining research  experience with school-aged children?

Project CLIMB (Capturing Language Immersion Benefits) is looking for dedicated students for hourly positions to assess the executive function skills of school-aged children in Grades K through 5 in Spring 2022.

Students must be available during school day hours (8:00am to 4:00pm).

Overview

Executive function (EF) skills are cognitive skills that we use to manage our activities as we work toward goals—like completing school assignments. The goal of Project CLIMB is to increase awareness and understanding of the benefits of bilingualism for children’s brain development—especially its impact on their EF skills. Our team will also document the key features of Dual Language Immersion programs that spur EF skills and English-Spanish biliteracy in Grades K to 5.

Assessments

In order to study the benefits of bilingualism and EF skills, a series of assessments need to be administered during the Spring 2022 semester (and beyond). 

Assessment Administrators

• We are currently recruiting undergraduate and graduate students at UMD to administer language, EF, non-verbal reasoning and reading comprehension assessments in English and Spanish.

• Assessments will be administered to students in Grades K to 5 in schools in DC Public Schools in Spring 2022.

Qualifications

Ideal candidates would have:

• Some experience with elementary school aged children or high interest in working with them

• Willingness to learn about cognitive (language, reading, EF skills) assessment administration, data entry and scoring.

• Ability to attend a training session and 2-3 fidelity checks.

Required:

• Availability during school hours (8:00am-4:00pm) at least 2 days a week.

• Spanish oral fluency (written fluency preferred)

Compensation

• Hourly wages commensurate with experience

• Mileage reimbursement (transportation to schools is necessary; carpooling is strongly encouraged).
