Paid Internship with National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace


The National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace (NSTIC) National Program Office (NPO) intern will assist NSTIC staff with communications, policy, and other weekly tasks including: media tracking and monitoring, analytics analyses for social media communication publications, assistance with the development of content for internal and external publications, recording meeting minutes, and the editing of documents prior to dissemination. The part-time intern will attend communication and policy meetings and will have the opportunity to work alongside experts in the identity management field to get hands-on professional experience for the future. 
Candidates should be available to work 10 hours per week (on-site at the Department of Commerce in Washington, DC). Candidates should also currently be enrolled in a Communication, Policy, Political Science or Journalism program (or related field) as an undergraduate student and should have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Juniors and Seniors are strongly encouraged to apply. This is a paid internship. Hourly pay will be discussed with candidates selected for an interview. 
Candidates must be well organized, have the ability to work collaboratively and think critically, and should have strong writing skills. Experience with the Microsoft product suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) is required. Prior experience writing for professional publications and graphic design experience is a plus.

Want to intern for the park police?

Duties and Responsibilities of Park Police Intern

Intern will be assigned to some or all the following sections within the Park Police Division and perform the following tasks:
·         Communications Section: Answer telephone/ direct calls from citizens,  dispatch calls for service, enter details in computerized system, Contacts M-NCPPC staff and external agencies (e.g. county police, fire and rescue, towing companies)  monitor alarms and closed circuit camera system, Serves walk-in visitors requesting M-NCPPC and/or Park Police assistance to provide information and relay messages
·         Investigative Section: Assist detectives with research , data entry, basic follow-up investigations,  filing and organization of field interviews
·         Community Services Section: Assists with community events/Park Police informational table, conduct safety surveys of park patrons/compile survey into reports. Intern will be assigned on occasion to ride-along with the Park Ranger.
·         Property Section: Assist with evidence intake, filing and organization.
·         Records Section: Assist with copy, distribution, filing of citations, reports etc. Interact with citizens, attorney’s and other agencies with regarding paying for copies of reports and tickets.
·         Park Police Special Operations (Barn/Stable Operations) : Inter will be assigned to barn manager and will have hands on training regarding safety around horses, grooming, horse nutrition/first aid, cleaning stalls, care for equipment, and general barn management.  Intern may assist mounted officer with a police/horse show-n-tell at a local school.
·         Patrol Section: Intern will go on occasional ride-along with patrol officers to learn basic patrol operations.

·         Intern may attend annual In-Service Training with police officers.

The Gilman International Scholarship Program offers 1,700 scholarships of up to $5,000 to students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies world-wide. Such international study is intended to better prepare U.S. students to assume significant roles in an increasingly global economy and interdependent world. In the past three years more than 100 Maryland students have won Gilman Scholarships!

UMD ACES II Cybersecurity Program

The new ACES II Cybersecurity Program  is recruiting students from across campus, including BSOS students. Although no prior computer programming is required, an interest in cybersecurity and a minimum of calculus I and a college-level statistics course are strongly recommended.   ACES II members will have access to industry professionals and become members of the Honors College.

The ACES Director's vision is that the challenges of cybersecurity can only be addressed through studying human behavior and developing technical solutions. 

Application will be available in early December 2014 for fall 2015.

Winter CCJS courses in College Park

Students,

This is a reminder that winter registration is open and active.  Winter is a great time for students to get ahead in their requirements and enroll in smaller, more discussion-based courses.  The CCJS department is offering several classes during the winter session including:

  • CCJS 300 Criminological and Criminal Justice Research Methods
  • CCJS 350 Juvenile Delinquency
  • CCJS 370 Race, Crime and Criminal Justice
  • CCJS454 Contemporary Criminological Theory


Registration for the winter session is completed through Testudo.  Winter term begins Monday, January 5, 2015 and ends Friday, January 23, 2015.  All students are limited to enrolling in one course during winter term.  For more information on the winter term including billing, registration, requirements and deadlines, please visit the winter term website at: www.winter.umd.edu.

Teach English Abroad This Summer


Learning Enterprises is a non-profit organization with the mission of expanding people’s horizons through conversation-based English language classes taught by American and international volunteers. There are opportunities in China, Thailand, Mongolia, Poland, Romania/Croatia, Hungary/Slovakia, Panama, Mauritius, Brazil, and Moldova. The biggest difference between Learning Enterprises and other service organizations is that we don’t charge our volunteers for volunteering abroad.
