Please double-check your spring 2023 schedule and carefully track your academic progress toward your major (and minor, if applicable) via uachieve.umd.edu. We recommend that you check your academic progress in U.Achieve at the beginning and end of every semester, and again right after you register for classes or change your schedule. If you have any questions about your U.Achieve record, contact your academic advisor.  

Academic Deadlines in Spring 2023

Before the semester begins is the best time to review the Academic Deadlines for spring 2023 and mark your calendar with these important dates.

January 24 is the last day to change from full-time to part-time status.
January 25 is the first day of spring 2023 classes.
February 7 is the last day to add/drop a class from your schedule.
February 7 is the last day to change the grading option for a class.
February 7 is the last day to drop 1 class without a W on your transcript.
April 11 is the last day to drop 1 class with a W on your transcript.

Paid Fellowship for USG Student!

  The Karel Fellowship is a paid summer opportunity that teaches students how to be a better advocate by interning with leading nonprofits. It is open to all First Generation and/or BIPOC students who will be returning as undergraduates in Fall 2023. (First Gen and BIPOC international students are welcome to apply, as are Dreamers.)

Ideal fellows are driven students who want to use their talents to advance social change and address the pressing issues of our time.

2023 BSOS Summer Research Initiative
The College of Behavioral and Social Sciences is accepting applications for the Summer Research Initiative (BSOS SRI)!

If you're looking for a paid summer program that will give you research experience in the behavioral and social sciences, then we encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity!

The BSOS Summer Research Initiative is part of the UMD’s College of Behavioral and Social Science’s long-standing commitment to increasing the number of underrepresented minorities who pursue graduate degrees in the social and behavioral sciences. The program provides rising juniors and seniors with an 8-week intensive experience to develop research skills, learn about doctoral training, and increase graduate training readiness. 
The SRI provides:

  • A $3,000 stipend (before taxes)
  • Travel to/from College Park, Maryland
  • University housing and meals
  • Program activities
Program Dates 
The 2023 BSOS SRI runs from June 5, 2023 - July 28, 2023. Participants are required to arrive Saturday, June 3rd for the weekend orientation.
Key Expectations

  • Be citizens or permanent residents of the United States;
  • Be enrolled full-time at an accredited four-year higher education institution, with preference given to those will have obtained junior or senior status by the fall 2023;
  • Demonstrate an interest in pursuing graduate study in one of the behavioral or social sciences, with preference given to those interested in doctoral studies;
  • Express an interest or commitment in the value of increasing the diversity and inclusion in social and behavioral science research;
  • Will have taken a basic statistics or research methodology course; and
  • Possess an excellent academic record, including a 3.0 or better cumulative GPA

The Applied Research Laboratory for Intelligence and Security (ARLIS) at the University of Maryland, College Park, is seeking outstanding undergraduate and graduate students to participate in the virtual Research for Intelligence & Security Challenges (RISC) Initiative internship program. This exciting 10-week paid program pairs students with faculty mentors from INSURE consortium member institutions and the Department of Defense (DOD) and Intelligence Community (IC) community, and offers the opportunity to be sponsored for a security clearance and to be considered for future employment with the U.S. government.


The RISC Initiative is particularly seeking interns with expertise in one or more of the following disciplines:

Mathematics and Statistics: Data analytics, quantitative modeling, experimental design, graph analytics.

Social & Behavioral Sciences: cognitive/neuroscience & psychology, sociology, criminal justice, teamwork and group dynamics, communications, disinformation and misinformation, social network analysis, anthropology, human geography (e.g., pattern of life/mobility modeling), political science, international relations.

Languages and Linguistics: languages of interest to global security including but not limited to Mandarin, Russian, Farsi, Korean, and Arabic; computational linguistics and natural language processing; natural language understanding.

Data Science: Data and knowledge engineering, data curation, tagging, metadata, repositories, data visualization, library sciences.

Additional topics may include: Measurement and evaluation of learning outcomes, environmental modeling and remote sensing, human factors, regulatory public policy.

 Legal Advocate (for recent grads): House of Ruth Maryland, a comprehensive domestic violence program, has a legal advocate position available.  The position is located in the Montgomery County courthouse.  This is an entry level position and training will be provided.  The hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 - 4:30.  The position is on-site and cannot be performed remotely.  The starting salary is $46,000. Preference is given to candidates who are bilingual in Spanish and English.  There is a 5% salary differential for a candidate who passes the Spanish proficiency test.  Anyone who is interested should email their resume and cover letter to me at dlennig@hruthmd.org.
