Priddy Library is looking to hire USG students (undergrad and graduate) who will be students in Fall 2022. We're hiring library student assistants to work part-time assisting library operations and working on projects to develop skills for their post-graduation careers.

The National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Response to Terrorism (START), based here at the University of Maryland, is now accepting applications for its Fall 2022 Paid Internship Program 

The fall application will remain open until Sunday, June 12th at 11:59pm ET, however students should apply by 11:59pm ET on Sunday, May 29th for best consideration. We were hoping you might be able to share the information below with any students and other contacts who you think may be interested in these opportunities! 

START's Fall 2022 internship program will be in person at START headquarters in College Park, MD. Remote internships will not be possible for the Fall 2022 semester.

Description

The Death Penalty Information Center (DPIC) in Washington, D.C., seeks interested candidates for a year-long Data Fellowship running from September 2022 to September 2023. The Center is a non-profit organization serving the media and the public with analysis and information on capital punishment. DPIC promotes informed discussion of the death penalty by preparing in-depth reports, conducting briefings for journalists, and serving as a resource to those working on this issue. The Data Fellow is the point person for managing DPIC’s data on death sentences and other aspects of capital punishment, and plays a key role in creating DPIC’s data visualizations. 

Timeline:

  • Preferred start date the week of September 5th, 2022
  • Applications due by June 8th, 2022
  • The position is a one-year fellowship to last until fall 2023.

Salary and Benefits:

  • $47,700, plus benefits including 401(k) matching
  • health/dental/vision insurance, and paid holidays, vacation, and sick leave

 Apply today for BSOS Summer/Fall 2022 Undergraduate Experience Funds!


 


These funds assist undergraduate BSOS majors engaged in experiential learning outside the classroom, such as unpaid internships, research, service-learning, and professional or academic virtual conferences. The funds are intended to help offset expenses related to such activities including, but not limited to:
  • Travel/transportation expenses
  • Professional attire
  • Opportunity costs (i.e. the need to give up a part-time paid job in order to take an unpaid internship)
  • Software/technology, material needs, not provided by employer/University, but essential to the experience 
  • Conference fees

If you are a BSOS student with financial need that is preventing you from taking advantage of an unpaid opportunity, we encourage you to apply for BSOS Undergraduate Experience Funds.  The best consideration date for Summer/Fall 2022 experience applications is Wednesday, June 1, 2022, by 11:59 PM. Funding will be allocated on a rolling basis, based on the availability of funds. This application will close on Friday, September 9, 2022, by 11:59 PM or when funding for Summer/Fall 2022 experiences has been exhausted.

Internship Description: The International Trade Administration’s Office of Public Affairs works with government leaders, trade specialists, and commercial diplomats in 50 states and 75 countries to communicate our important mission of promoting U.S. exports abroad and attracting foreign investment into our communities. From journalists to trade organizations to think-tanks and top industry sectors, ITA has many audiences that rely on our services and data, and we help our experts master the message for any occasion. The intern will be a part of a team responsible for media relations, social media content creation and calendar management, public engagement clearances, internal messages, interagency coordination on public messaging, and more. General duties of the position include: • Assisting with drafting and editing social media content to include tweets, blogs, and LinkedIn posts; • Researching and vetting inquiries received via phone and e-mail and distribute accordingly; • Compiling daily news clips that help inform top ITA leadership of breaking news; • Regular office reporting to leadership and the Department’s OPA; • Facilitating clearance of public engagements for ITA staff; and • Assisting in the coordination of various assignments from top officials in the Department of Commerce. Some examples of materials and projects an ITA OPA intern would assist with in summer 2022 are communication plans for DOC and ITA officials as they travel the world to meet global leaders, World Trade Month social media planning, pre-planning and attending the SelectUSA Investment Summit in Washington, DC, and more. This is an unpaid internship. Interns will receive D.C. Metro stipends to cover the cost of commuting to/from work. Qualifications: Ideal candidates have an interest in journalism/communications, public policy, international relations, trade, or business; excellent writing and organizational skills; computer skills (e.g. MS Office, SharePoint, social media platforms, graphic design skills are a plus); and are currently enrolled in a university program. The candidate should be self-motivated, able to work in a fast paced environment, and be able to handle multiple competing priorities. The position is part of a team and requires frequent and effective communication and coordination.

Counterterrorism and Forensic Science Research Unit Opportunity


 The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Counterterrorism and Forensic Science Research Unit’s (CFSRU) provides technical leadership for the FBI as well as for other law enforcement and intelligence agencies through applied research and development.

What will I be doing? As a participant with the Counterterrorism and Forensic Science Research Unit’s (CFSRU) Visiting Scientist Program (VSP), you will have an opportunity to enhance your professional development and increase your research capabilities and contributions by participating in forensic research initiatives utilizing state-of-the-art equipment under the mentorship of CFSRU scientists. The VSP will expose you to a research environment in a high security government facility and provides an opportunity to perform research in areas of interest unique to law enforcement and national security.

You may be involved in research including:

  • Human identification
  • Detection of Bio-threat agents
  • Detection of explosives and drugs
  • Characterization and comparison of forensic materials
  • Elemental analysis of trace evidence
  • Mass spectrometry applications to chemical and biological analyses, including IRMS
  • Development of instrumental methods
  • Evaluation of field portable instrumentation
  • Advancement of forensic chemistry, specifically in toxicology, and trace volatiles
  • Advancement of techniques for Imaging and Visualization

Under the guidance of a mentor, you may be involved in some or all of the following:

  • Conducting searches of scientific literature
  • Designing experimental plans
  • Conducting field tests
  • Performing analytical laboratory analyses
  • Analyzing instrumental data/ documenting results
  • Preparing and presenting research findings to diverse audiences, both orally and in writing

Why should I apply? Under the guidance of a mentor you will perform sophisticated laboratory techniques using emerging technologies, judge the completeness and accuracy of research results, perform statistical analyses on data, and prepare written manuscripts for FBI review and publication in peer-reviewed journals.

The details:

As a participant you will receive a stipend as support for your living and other expenses during this appointment. Stipend rates are determined by the CFSRU officials and are based on your academic and professional background. Relocation expenses, not to exceed $1,000, incurred in relocating from your current address to Quantico, Virginia (if more than 50 miles from the address shown on the application), may be reimbursed. You will receive a travel allowance of $5,000 per appointment year to cover travel-related expenses to scientific and professional development activities. The initial appointment can be for the summer or for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of FBI contingent on the availability of funds. The appointment can be made on a full-time or part-time basis.

You must meet the following criteria to participate in the program:

·       Be a U.S. Citizen.

·       Have completed requirements for a Bachelor’s, Master, or PhD or complete all the requirements for the degree by the anticipated start date of the appointment.
