How to Get Experience When You Have No Experience?

Vault, a careers website accessible through Careers4Terps has a new article and infographic on this topic:

by Kaitlin McManus | August 23, 2019

If you've been on the hunt for an entry-level position at any point in the last few years, I'm sure you've seen those job listings that can best be described as supremely frustrating: those that are listed as entry level, but the first qualifications bullet point reads "two years experience required."
I know. Deep breath. It's mindbogglingly frustrating because that's not what "entry level" even means. It's right there in the name—an entry-level job is for someone just entering the field. "Internships preferred" is one thing, but two years of industry experience isn't something that most recent grads are going to have. But the reality is that, as competition between recent grads increases, experience is the thing that employers look to that sets the perfect candidate apart. But the question remains—how does one go about getting the experience required to get a job if all the jobs out there require experience?

Internship Opportunities with the International Rescue Committee (IRC)

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) was founded at the behest of Albert Einstein in 1933 to assist people fleeing from persecution. Since then, the IRC has grown and works all over the world, providing humanitarian support. In the United States, the IRC is one of 9 US refugee resettlement agencies given permission from the federal government to resettle refugees in the United States. In Silver Spring, the IRC works with refugees the moment they step off the plane to help them get situated and become self-sufficient members of their new community.

Each semester (fall, spring, and summer) IRC works to recruit 25-30 interns to get hands-on experience in refugee resettlement. They typically hold nearly 20 unique internships that offer a wide variety of opportunities to develop different skills and gain experience. Most internships allow students to work directly with refugees to teach them or help them accomplish tasks needed to live successfully in the US.

If you want professional, hands-on experience working with refugees, asylees, & trafficking victims, apply to be an intern with the IRC in Silver Spring! Internships roles include:
  • Anti-Trafficking
  • Asylee Casework
  • Career Development
  • Refugee Casework
  • Cultural Orientation
  • Family Mentor
  • Immigration
  • Intensive Case Management
  • Logistics
  • Logistics and Casework
  • Refugee TANF Program
  • Workforce Development
  • Youth Development
Most internships require a minimum of 15 hours per week. However, interns who can dedicate more time (~32 hours a week) will get the most out of their experience as it will allow them to take on more responsibilities and projects. Unfortunately, all internships are unpaid. All selected interns will need to undergo and clear a background check to intern. The IRC is not able to sponsor visas. Students who hold a US visa will need to coordinate with the Volunteer Coordinator to determine if they are eligible to inter.

Internships take places in Silver Spring, MD. The office is accessible via metro as well as many bus routes.
