Smith Business Minor Information Session (in College Park)



The Smith Business Minor program will be hosting two upcoming information sessions for students who would like to explore the possibility of adding one of three Business minors to their academic portfolio. 

Students who are interested in Business Analytics should attend the Tuesday, October 1st session at 6 pm in Van Munching 2511. While those interested in General Business or the Innovation & Entrepreneurship minors should attend the information session on Thursday, October 3rd at 6pm in Van Munching 1330.

Join Alpha Phi Sigma: First Meeting on Sept 25


Image result for alpha phi sigmaThe first meeting of Alpha Phi Sigma (APS) will be held on Wednesday, September 25 from 4:30 PM – 5:30 PM in LeFrak Hall, room 1222.  Current and interested members should try to attend.  

A new Board of Officers (President, Vice President, and Secretary) will be elected and activities will be planned.  In order to run for an officer position, students must be a current member of APS.  Students joining APS in Fall 2019 will not be eligible to run for office. Students interested in running for office should prepare a very brief presentation about themselves.  If you cannot attend but would like to run for an office, please email Nicole Jackson (jacksonn@umd.edu) a short blurb about yourself that will be read to the group.

Alpha Phi Sigma:
Alpha Phi Sigma is the National Criminal Justice Honor Society founded in 1942. Alpha Phi Sigma recognizes academic excellence of Undergraduate and Graduate students of Criminal Justice, as well as Juris Doctorate students.  The goals of Alpha Phi Sigma are to honor and promote academic excellence, community service, educational leadership and unity (http://www.alphaphisigma.org/).  The CCJS staff advisor for Alpha Phi Sigma is Nicole Jackson.


Membership Requirements:
Membership is open to CCJS majors who have completed at least 40 total credits with at least 12 credits in CCJS courses. Applicants must have completed at least one semester at the University of Maryland, College Park (UMD) and have an established UMD grade point average.  Undergraduate applicants must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.20 and a minimum CCJS major grade point average of a 3.20. 

To Apply:
Applicants must 1.  Fill out the application 2.  Submit the application and  a check (personal is fine)/ money order/cash (must be exact change) to the chapter advisor Nicole Jackson in CCJS Advising (2201 LeFrak).  Checks and money orders must be made out to "Alpha Phi Sigma" for $75.00 ($70 of which goes to the National fee and $5 goes to the local chapter).  
Applications are processed once at the beginning of the fall semester (due: October 4) and once at the beginning of the spring semester (due: February 14). It generally takes a few weeks to get official acceptance.  Once a student has been accepted, he or she will receive a certificate and pin.  Students are notified of their acceptance via Nicole Jackson.

Homeland Security Investigations
Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) is the largest investigative agency of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. HSI is a vital United States asset in combating criminal organizations exploiting America's trade, travel and financial systems.

HSI’s workforce includes special agents, intelligence research specialists, technical enforcement officers, computer forensics analysts, seized property specialists, auditors, and administrative staff. Its men and women are assigned to cities throughout the U.S. and to offices around the world.

Student Volunteer Internship 
HSI recruits interns from a wide variety of educational backgrounds, including criminal justice, business, and public administration, computer science, and engineering.

The Student Volunteer Internship provides unpaid opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students, who want to develop their professional skills, exposure to law enforcement, and explore career paths within HSI. Students may enroll in an internship course to earn academic credit upon successful completion of the program. The Spring 2020 program will take place in Baltimore, MD.

Last Graduate Research & Writing Bootcamp (This Sat., 9/7)

The Priddy Library, Career & Internship Services Center, and the Center for Academic Success will host the final Graduate Research and Writing Bootcamp this Saturday, 9/7. 

At the Bootcamp, we offer several interactive workshops designed to prepare students for the expectations and demands of the graduate-level research and writing process. On Sept. 7, CISC will be joining us to support students in developing public speaking and presentation skills.

The Arlington County Police Department Investigative Assistant Internship is currently accepting applications for exceptional undergraduate students interns. The Spring 2020 deadline is October 1, 2019.  Applications submitted after that deadline will not be accepted.

Victim Services Internship Opening- DC Forensic Nurse Examiners

Overview:
DC Forensic Nurse Examiners (DCFNE) seeks a Program Intern to assist the Executive Director and DCFNE staff with administrative and programmatic duties such as routine clerical tasks and program outreach. This position offers the opportunity to develop office and professional skills while providing experience in a victim service nonprofit. DCFNE’s Program Intern will learn about the dynamics of sexual and domestic violence, as they relate to medical forensic care. 

Duties:

  • Provide administrative support to the Executive Director and management team
  • Maintain daily operations including basic financial tasks and supply/equipment management
  • Attend community outreach and education events on behalf of DCFNE
  • Cultivate and maintain DCFNE’s social media presence
  • Assist with clinical forensic program needs, as assigned
  • Attend monthly staff meetings and compile meeting notes 
  • Other tasks and duties as assigned



Qualifications:

  • Highly motivated and able to work independently 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to produce results in a flexible work environment
  • Comfort and proven ability using social media platforms
  • Ability to travel in the Washington, DC metropolitan area by personal car or public transportation

Schedule and Compensation:
This position is part time, 6-8 hours per week. Flexible scheduling options available. The hourly rate for this position is $20/hour.
