The Pathways Internship Program targets students accepted for enrollment or enrolled and seeking a degree or certificate at an accredited educational institution. The program provides students with paid internship opportunities to explore Federal careers while in school. Students receive training to help them advance in their internship as well as work experience that augments their education. Students who successfully complete the program may obtain a permanent job in the Federal Government.

Duties
Students placed in internships via this announcement will work with SEC staff members on various projects and assignments that cover a broad range of the Commissions' work. The work assigned will depend upon a student's placement within a Division or Office. Internship assignments range from supporting securities regulations to assisting in professional administrative duties such as human resources, contracting, auditing, etc.

Typical duties include the following:

  • Assist in conducting analysis and research in support of assigned program areas.
  • Respond to routine questions within the assigned program areas.
  • Assist in the maintenance of automated databases.

The SEC's Headquarters is located in Washington, DC. The SEC consists of 11 Regional Offices located across the United States, refer to the "Locations" section of this announcement for the list of locations. PDS Overview: The Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia (PDS) is a federally funded, independent organization governed by an eleven-member Board of Trustees.  PDS provides legal representation for indigent individuals who are charged with criminal offenses in the District of Columbia and face a loss of liberty.  PDS has approximately 200 employees, most of whom work at the main office at 633 Indiana Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C.  PDS’s staff consists of approximately 100 attorneys and approximately 100 social workers, investigators, administrative, and technical staff.  PDS is funded by federal appropriations, and all employees are entitled to participate in certain federal benefits plans: health and life insurance, federal retirement, and Thrift Savings Plan. Transferring employees will receive recognition of creditable federal service for leave accrual and retirement purposes.

Division Description: The mission of the Investigation Division is to stay ahead of the rapidly-evolving investigative landscape in order to zealously serve PDS's clients. Our investigators passionately and diligently investigate cases and assist all divisions of PDS. Investigators not only go through rigorous training, but also provide specialized training to other court-appointed investigators and attorneys. PDS investigators are well versed in the art of interviews and statements, mixed media, and forensics. Our investigators use their skills in-house and in the field to leave no stone unturned in PDS's clients' cases. Working on all aspects of a case, from the arraignment to the trial, our investigators are an invaluable component of the defense team

Essential Duties:

Major Duties: This position works in concert with legal defense counsel in the Special Litigation Division (SLD) that is focusing on post-conviction litigation pursuant to the Incarceration Reduction Amendment Act (“IRAA” – D.C. Code  24-403.03) in D.C. Superior Court. 

An investigative specialist, under the supervision of the assigned attorney, plans and conducts complete investigations and back ground history of clients as assigned. This is accomplished by interviews with witnesses, visiting correctional facilities, researching records, contacting various sources for the purpose of obtaining facts, signed statements, etc. An investigator verifies and corroborates all information obtained, analyzes findings, and presents findings in comprehensive written reports for use by attorneys. Duties may also include additional division-related work.

Required Qualifications:

Educational Requirement: All candidates selected for the position must possess: A Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice Administration, Law, Criminology, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, English, Journalism/Mass Communication and/or other related field.

To qualify for the grade 9, a candidate must possess the aforementioned educational requirement and the following experience:

Specialized Experience:  Candidates must have at least one year of specialized experience as a criminal defense staff investigator or criminal defense investigative specialist (investigating felony level cases), including experience with word processing, criminal justice database usage, social media usage, data input, and criminal defense related data analysis.

Other Requirements: (1) Incumbent must have insured, reliable and available transportation; (2) incumbent must have no convictions as defined in D.C. Code Sec. 14.305(b)(1) (Impeachment by evidence of conviction of crime); and (3) applicant must be a US Citizen or have current authorization to work in the United States.

  • The ability to fluently speak and write Spanish;
  • Training and/or internship experience in criminal defense investigations;

  • The skills and ability to provide quantitative and qualitative analysis and assessment of data evidence; 
  • Possess computing skills and proficiency in Adobe Acrobat Pro (PDF), Criminal Justice Database usage, researching Social Media content, criminal defense related data input/analysis and/or other related proprietary software;
  • Experience in organizing for and/or serving the homeless, incarcerated, underserved and/or immigrant communities;
  • The willingness to learn and utilize proprietary and evolving technology as related to investigations is also desirable.

The Program Coordinator, Fellowship Unit is an individual contributor to the effectiveness and success of one or more assigned programs and the work of the Fellowship Unit overall. The work of the Program Coordinator impacts the successful delivery of projects, programs, and unit operational plans aligned to Equal Justice Works’ strategic plan. The Coordinator will be primarily assigned to the Disaster Resilience program, a national fellowship program that places groups of lawyers and law students at nonprofit legal services organizations (host sites) to provide free civil legal services before, during, and after disasters.

 

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the supervision of the Senior Program Manager (Disaster Resilience Program), the Program Coordinator:             

  • Supports day-to-day operations of programs, with assigned responsibilities for program administration activities.
  • Supports program start up, implementation and/or continuation activities.
  • Supports monitoring of program timelines and operational plans to track project milestones and ensure award compliance.
  • Acts as administrative point person for host organizations, Fellows and other program stakeholders generally and during programmatic and financial reporting. Facilitates ongoing communication and information sharing.
  • Assists in coordinating RFP and Fellow recruitment processes, subrecipient programmatic capability and performance evaluation. Supports periodic program monitoring activities, including conducting desk reviews.
  • Maintains a general understanding of compliance regulations, grant conditions, and internal policies and procedures to effectively identify and raise issues to Unit management.
  • Supports management of program data, reviews and provides input on reports.
  • Provides administrative support on program-specific training and technical assistance activities, such as webinars/teleconferences and in-person events, executes on assigned annual Leadership Development Training program deliverables.
  • Supports continuous improvement efforts for program strategies and operational tools.
  • Provides range of general administrative support as assigned, including invoicing, scheduling, travel planning, notetaking, etc.
  • Maintains up to date program records for external and internal purposes.
  • Participates in broader Public Programs Unit-wide activities and initiatives, and acts as a liaison and program/Unit representative for internal committees as assigned.
  • Undertakes other duties as assigned by supervisor or by Unit Vice President.

Position Overview

The Sexual Assault Legal Institute (SALI), a program within the Maryland Coalition Against Sexual Assault (MCASA), is seeking a Full-Time Legal Advocate to help sexual assault survivors, including those affected by the backlog of untested sexual assault evidence kits in Maryland. This position provides direct services to sexual assault survivors and assists with online communication to provide survivors with legal information and other resources.  Administrative duties include assisting with grants management and maintaining victim notification preferences using a client database.  SALI provides legal services to survivors of sexual violence, and training & technical assistance to service providers working with survivors. This position reports directly to the SAKI Victim Notification Project Manager.

Note:  MCASA staff is currently working remotely due to COVID-19 restrictions.  Staff generally must be available for meetings with partners or events in the State of Maryland as necessary and if safe.  Staff may return to work on-site part-time in Silver Spring at some point in the future and is currently permitted to work in the office subject to social distancing, PPE, and occupancy restrictions.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Conduct victim notifications and initial interviews (intakes) with survivors of sexual assault impacted by the sexual assault evidence kit backlog in Maryland.
  • Provide high quality, culturally competent advocacy for survivors of sexual assault.
  • Provide technical assistance to law enforcement and advocates conducting trauma-informed victim notifications.
  • Maintain client victim notification preferences within the notification database.
  • Assist in the creation of victim notification individual plans and coordinate victim notification with law enforcement SAKI liaisons and local victim advocates.
  • Provide safety planning for survivors.
  • Participate in forums and meetings relating to SALI and SAKI activities.
  • Assist attorneys of sexual assault survivors in a range of cases; these may include protective and peace orders, U-visa, family law, crime victim rights, education, employment and other cases.
  • Coordinate and develop culturally competent outreach materials and arrange for appropriate translation of current SALI and SAKI literature.
  • Assist in the production of training and technical assistance materials including dissemination of recent research findings or policy changes to rape crisis and recovery centers, MCASA members, law enforcement agencies, and professionals working with survivors.
  • Increase SAKI and SALI’s presence on social media and improve legal information available on MCASA’s agency-wide website. 
  • Support updating website content including researching and updating factsheets and other resource webpages.
  • Support effective agency communications including, for example, listservs, social media, e-newsletter, conference calls, etc.
  • Collect data needed for grant reports or other reasons; assist in report preparation using LegalServer database.
  • Assist in recruiting and work with legal interns.
  • Prioritize and fulfill responsibilities in accordance with available funding and grant requirements.
  • Comply with or assist others in compliance with the Rules of Professional Conduct (legal ethics).
  • Ensure compliance with grant objectives, goals, collection of data and reporting requirements.
  • Prepare grant reports and assist with development of grant applications
  • Commitment to complying with PPE recommendations including wearing a mask, social distancing, and sanitation. Flexibility to work off-site or on-site.

Qualifications

  • Commitment to ending sexual violence
  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Women’s Studies, Education, Sociology, Criminal Justice, Social Work, AA in Paralegal Studies, or equivalent experience required. 
  • Experience working with survivors of sexual assault or other power-based violence such as domestic violence, child abuse, elder abuse, preferred.
  • Familiar with the national sexual assault kit backlog issues and effective responses.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. Performing arts or debating experience preferred.
  • Strong oral and written communication, organizational, problem-solving and planning skills
  • Fluent in English; conversant in Spanish or other language strongly preferred.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Power Point, Excel), NEON, Mailchimp, and Adobe Connect preferred   
  • Ability to use and communicate professionally and effectively through e-mail and social media including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other platforms; able to learn and use new technology such as online databases and communication systems
  • Understanding of and experience with providing trauma-informed and victim-centered services.
  • Skilled and enthusiastic about developing ways to share legal information via technology, including social media and website.
  • Familiarity with LegalServer or commitment to learn database.
  • Knowledge and/or previous work experience with sexual assault related issues preferred.
  • Ability to work remotely (equipment is provided by agency). Ability to work in office in Silver Spring, Maryland when public health recommendations permit.
  • Access to a car and valid driver’s license; this position requires travel within the State of Maryland.  Out of state travel required 1-3 times annually.

Position Overview

The Maryland Coalition Against Sexual Assault (MCASA) advocates for accessible, compassionate care for survivors, the prevention of sexual assault, and accountability for all offenders.  MCASA actively works to end sexual violence in the State of Maryland through professional training, public outreach, public policy advocacy,   technical assistance, and legal services.

Through hands-on learning responsibilities, MCASA’s program interns are engaged in the important effort to end rape, child sexual abuse, and the full continuum of sexual violence including campus sexual assault and human sex trafficking. They are exposed to the latest thinking in the field of sexual assault prevention and response through webinars and trainings, professional meetings, and written resource materials. Program interns also come away with practical knowledge about a statewide nonprofit organization’s strategies for office management, internal and external communications, professional training, and public outreach.  

A minimum commitment of 15 hours per week is required.  Interns are encouraged to work with their academic institutions to seek credit.

This internship located at our metro-accessible Silver Spring, MD office. Remote work is available during COVID-19.

 

Intern Objectives

  • Develop and expand knowledge regarding sexual violence and policies to prevent and respond to sexual assault and abuse.
  • Develop ability to write and format professional documents such as letters, fact sheets, website content, and newsletter articles.
  • Expand professional speaking skills by answering and making telephone calls.
  • Become familiar with client referrals by providing information about MCASA’s Sexual Assault Legal Institute and Maryland rape crisis and recovery centers to survivors who call the office.
  • Learn about event management by assisting with logistics coordination for professional training sessions and fundraising events.
  • Enhance research skills by completing written projects regarding sexual violence.
  • Develop an understanding of nonprofit membership development and engagement by updating and maintaining electronic database records.
  • Participate in public outreach by attending events, staffing community information fairs, and fulfilling orders for resource brochures.
  • Become familiar with a varied-pace office environment that juggles both immediate and longer-term projects.
  • Contribute to development of office resources on specific topics.   

 

Qualifications 

  • Be genuinely concerned about sexual violence issues and have a passion and desire to make a difference
  • Have a desire to learn about non-profit organizations and practices
  • Be organized, have a strong attention to detail, and be able to complete projects independently
  • Be computer and internet savvy: experience and proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint preferred
  • Be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing

This internship is particularly relevant for students pursuing degrees in communications, social sciences, criminal justice, or Women’s Studies, but we welcome applications from those in any field.

Compensation

This internship is unpaid.  We encourage interns to seek academic credit or stipends when possible.
