Full Time Temporary Job with International Rescue Committee in Silver Spring for Recent Grad


The Employment Assistant supports the economic empowerment team (EET) in provision of services to assist newly arrived refugee clients to attain self sufficiency through employment. Specifically, the Employment Assistant ensures services that include employment training, documentation and follow-up. This is a temporary position through September 30, 2016. This position reports to a Senior Employment Specialist and coordinates volunteers and interns’ activities. 

Responsibilities: 

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: 

  • Assess incoming clients to determine eligibility and best employment program. Cross-check intake process to ensure all clients are enrolled in one suitable employment program.
  • Coordinate the job readiness training (JRT) calendar for core job readiness trainings, financial capability and JRT labs.
    • Coordinate and advise interns and volunteers who participate in the JRT process, including provision of training feedback to interns and volunteers.
    • Serve as a primary JRT trainer when interns and volunteers are not available.
  • Support employment specialists in providing direct services such as resume writing, online applications, uniform purchases and accompanying clients to interviews.
  • Support EET administrative needs, data entry and data quality monitoring. Perform case file and ETO data checks as requested by employment supervisor.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements: 
  • Undergraduate degree is preferred.
  • Training experience
  • Strong organizational skills including the ability to accurately collect and check data.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, concisely and professionally in writing and in person with volunteers, interns, peers and supervisors.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Fluent written and verbal English skills. Bilingual speaking ability in Dari, French, Amharic or another local client language preferred.
  • Proven success achieving goals and working effectively with all levels of staff in a multicultural environment.
  • Valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle with current insurance, and the ability to travel regularly throughout the service delivery area preferred.

Research Assistant, Center on Social Dynamics and Policy Brookings Institution for Recent Grad


The Research Assistant, CSDP assists with research using agent-based models, output presentation. Topics include public health (obesity, tobacco, infectious disease epidemiology), economics, and behavioral/social sciences.
Responsibilities:
Research Assistance (60%)
  • Compiles, reads, and provides analytical reviews and summaries of diverse existing literatures from multiple fields of science pertinent to projects.
  • Synthesizes literature in the form of background papers, analytical reviews, or outlines for the benefit of CSDP and external partners.
  • In collaboration with senior research staff, drafts material for incorporation into working papers and project publications, particularly literature reviews but may also be called upon to write up results or methodology.
  • Contributes to parameterization of models by drawing on established literature to quantify relationships between and among variables.
  • Maintains electronic bibliography files, organizes references for manuscripts/websites/proposals, and locates relevant documents from electronic sources.
Visualization and Reports (20%)
  • Converts agent-based model outputs to viewable form for analyses and presentations. 
  • Assists in drafting written reports and online profiles for funders and external research partners describing model design, implementation, and results.
  • Works with the scholar to create PowerPoint presentations for use in summarizing research findings to outside audiences. 
  • Assists in preparation and revision of manuscripts and proposals.
  • 10% Programming Simulation and Statistical Assistance.
  • Some data analysis responsibilities – analyzing STATA output or using STATA or Excel to create graphics.
  • Interfaces with external research partners to obtain, process, and convert outside data into forms suitable for integration into agent-based models.
Administrative Support (10%)
  • Assists scholar with miscellaneous administrative tasks.
  • Assists scholar with planning Brookings events to present research.
  • Write and edit summaries to be posted on Center and scholar webpages.
Qualifications:
Education/Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in economics, mathematics/statistics, or a related quantitative field required. Master’s degree in a related field a plus. One-year job experience in scientific research in social science or public health preferred but not required. Competence to undertake research assignments with little supervision.
Knowledge/Skills Requirements
Strong writing and research skills, ability to work with empirical data and statistics, ability to condense academic articles on a wide variety of topics. Experience or familiarity with agent-based computational modeling preferred but not required.

Eligibility for Award
The Joseph M. Mitchell Memorial Scholarship is one-time award of up to $2,000, dispersed evenly over the fall and spring semesters.  The scholarship may be awarded to one or more deserving students.  All awards will be directly applied to student accounts.  Students may apply and/or be nominated by other individuals. To be eligible for the Scholarship Award, a student must meet the following established criteria:

  1. Be a registered degree-seeking student at the University of Maryland, College Park during the semester for which the award is made
  2. Have completed at least one full semester of enrollment at a college or university and/or be enrolled at the time of application
  3. Have personal or family circumstances that have affected the applicant’s experience at the University of Maryland and that have caused or contributed to a burden that may be remedied in whole or in part by the scholarship award
  4. Have at least one semester of study left at UMCP before receiving a degree
  5. Be able to apply the full amount of the award to tuition, living expenses or schooling expenses, such as textbooks or equipment, in the semester for which the scholarship is awarded and as can be disbursed by the Office of Student Financial Aid.

The recipient of each scholarship award also will be expected to:

  1. Have a demonstrated record of service to people in his/her community(ies), whether past or present
  2. Participate in service to the University of Maryland community during the semester for which the scholarship award is made, through an action such as tutoring, mentoring a new student, speaking to a student audience, or other similar activity agreed upon by the recipient and the Scholarship Award Committee.

This scholarship will be awarded based on the responses to the application or nomination questions. If necessary, up to three finalists may be invited to meet with the Scholarship Award Committee. Entry Level Research Assistant Positions for Recent Grads with Child Trends

Responsibilities:

Arab American Institute Communications, Policy, and Programs Internships


DESCRIPTION
Communications Intern (1 spot available): Supports the Communications Department with online, email, and social media communications as well as website maintenance. Responsibilities include writing, posting and formatting blogs, creating e-blasts, and assisting with press outreach.

DESCRIPTION
The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is seeking a Research Assistant to support the Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress (CSTS), located at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) in Bethesda, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to CSTS.

The Center’s work addresses a wide scope of trauma exposure from the consequences of combat, operations other than war, terrorism, natural and human-made disasters, and public health threats. CSTS is a part of our nation’s federal medical school, USUHS, and its Department of Psychiatry, as well as a partnering center of the Defense Centers of Excellence (DCoE) for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury. These affiliations represent the Center’s history, mission and future directions as a major contributor to our country’s understanding of the impact of trauma and the advancement of trauma-informed care.

Investigator with the Office of Police Complaints (DC) Position for Recent Grad



Job Summary 
Investigator I is the entry-level job in the Investigator job progression. Investigator I conducts routine or simple investigations, or assists in larger more complex investigations, while developing investigatory knowledge and experience and receiving greater supervision. This job is distinguished from Investigator II which is the intermediate level, and receives less supervision and investigates moderately complex issues, reviews technical work, and provides training to junior Investigators.

The Office of Police Complaints (OPC), a District of Columbia government agency that investigates citizen complaints of police misconduct, seeks to hire an investigator. OPC investigators, who report to the chief investigator and two other supervisors, are responsible for conducting administrative investigations of the use of unnecessary or excessive force, harassment, discrimination, and other types of misconduct allegations made against D.C. Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and D.C. Housing Authority Office of Public Safety (OPS) officers.

The major responsibilities of an OPC investigator include, but are not limited to: planning and conducting investigations; interviewing and taking statements from complainants, witnesses, and police officers; gathering and analyzing evidence; making credibility determinations; and preparing well organized and thorough investigative reports.
District code prohibits hiring current or former MPD officers or civilian employees for this position.   Application pre-screening dates are June 3, 2016 and June 17, 2016.

Qualifications 

Applicants must have: (1) some relevant investigative experience; (2) excellent interpersonal skills; (3) strong writing skills; and (4) good judgment and high ethical standards. The Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation and Council for a Livable World are seeking to hire a Communications Officer. The Communications Officer's focus will be on outreach to the press and media.
Candidates should be outgoing, self-motivated, self-starters, able to work in a fast-paced environment and be able to multi-task assignments. A B.A. or B.S. and excellent writing and editing skills are required. Familiarity with national security issues is a plus.
The Communications Officer shall have responsibility to prepare, coordinate, plan and execute a communications strategy for the Center and Council across earned, paid, placed and digital media, including preparing press releases, graphics, charts, slides, etc. at the direction of the Executive Director (ED) and in furtherance of amplifying and distributing the organizations' messages and enhancing their reputations and recognition.
Also, the Communications Officer will have responsibility of preparing and editing speeches, correspondence, e-appeals, "snail" mail reports, solicitations, and advocacy materials, as well as writing and editing other materials such as talking points, op-eds, letters, and:
  • Editing, pitching and coordinating writing of articles for outside publication
  • Monitoring and tracking coverage of the Center and Council in the media
  • Serving as a point of contact for media requests
  • Cultivating relationships with reporters, editors, high-profile bloggers, and other media figures with the goal of promoting our mission and work

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of international development programming, project development, and grants administration. Basic knowledge of emergency livelihoods, shelter or disaster risk reduction programming.
  • Good analytical skills.
  • Fluency in English, written and oral. Fluency in a relevant second language, preferably Arabic or Spanish would be an asset.
  • Able to work under general supervision, handling and completing multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Willingness to mobilize to difficult locations and situations on short notice. Willingness to travel approximately 25% of time depending on office needs.
  • Advanced knowledge of word processing, excel, and database maintenance.
  • Able to work in a team environment.
  • Accuracy, attention to detail required in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to read and interpret documents and ability to sit at a computer and operate a keyboard.
Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor’s degree in relevant discipline and 0-2 years of experience.
  • One year experience working in an international non-profit or similar development or humanitarian organization preferred.
  • Experience in USG and UN-funded programs preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Fall semester courseTuesday7:00-10:00 p.m. The two instructors are active duty American Foreign Service Officers with diplomatic experience in the Middle East, Europe, and Latin America. Class visitors will include senior American and foreign officials and other policy leaders.
