Communications Officer, Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation Position for Recent Grad

The Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation and Council for a Livable World are seeking to hire a Communications Officer. The Communications Officer's focus will be on outreach to the press and media.
Candidates should be outgoing, self-motivated, self-starters, able to work in a fast-paced environment and be able to multi-task assignments. A B.A. or B.S. and excellent writing and editing skills are required. Familiarity with national security issues is a plus.
The Communications Officer shall have responsibility to prepare, coordinate, plan and execute a communications strategy for the Center and Council across earned, paid, placed and digital media, including preparing press releases, graphics, charts, slides, etc. at the direction of the Executive Director (ED) and in furtherance of amplifying and distributing the organizations' messages and enhancing their reputations and recognition.
Also, the Communications Officer will have responsibility of preparing and editing speeches, correspondence, e-appeals, "snail" mail reports, solicitations, and advocacy materials, as well as writing and editing other materials such as talking points, op-eds, letters, and:
  • Editing, pitching and coordinating writing of articles for outside publication
  • Monitoring and tracking coverage of the Center and Council in the media
  • Serving as a point of contact for media requests
  • Cultivating relationships with reporters, editors, high-profile bloggers, and other media figures with the goal of promoting our mission and work
  • Maintaining and regularly updating press lists
  • Identifying and exploiting opportunities to project/insert the organizations' message into the public debate, especially using digital media
  • Promoting the Center and Council on social networks such as Facebook, YouTube and Twitter
  • Assisting the ED, and such other staff, Board members, and members of National Advisory Board members as the ED may direct, with media relations
  • Assisting in organizing events and scheduling and coordinating panelists or other participants for same
  • Assisting with the researching and drafting of grant proposals and reports as directed by the ED from time to time
  • Other communications and administrative responsibilities may be delegated by the ED from time to time at ED's discretion
The Communications Officer will report to the Executive Director.
Salary is commensurate with experience. Benefits are included.
