Study Human Trafficking in Thailand Winter 2016 Human trafficking, while not widely understood, ranks among the most severe and lucrative of criminal enterprises around the world. During this course, you will be exposed to the consequences of and reactions to human trafficking in an international context, specifically in Thailand. You will spend your time in the Northern region of the country, visiting both Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai. Highlights of the two-week trip will include cultural excursions, speaking engagements with knowledgeable people on the state of human trafficking in Thailand, and volunteer work at the Development and Education Programme for Daughters and Communities Centre, an NGO that works primarily to prevent and to protect children and youth from being trafficked into exploitative labour conditions. Through these activities, you will gain exposure to and an understanding of human trafficking in a way that is not possible in the United States. Dr. Wendy Stickle(link sends e-mail) is the administrator of the CCJS undergraduate program at Shady Grove. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Maryland Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice in 2009. She teaches courses related to research methods, criminological theory, juvenile delinquency, and human trafficking. Dr. Stickle is the previous chair and current committee member for the Montgomery County Criminal Justice Commission.  Christine White(link sends e-mail) is a faculty member in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Maryland, College Park. White earned her bachelor degree in sociology from the University of Pennsylvania and her Juris Doctor from American University Washington College of Law. White has taught in College Park since 2003 and in 2011 proposed and began teaching the first class at the University of Maryland completely devoted to the topic of human trafficking.  Click here to learn more.
