Policy and Advocacy Paid Internship


The Detention Watch Network is hiring an intern for the spring semester.

The Policy & Advocacy Intern will work with DWN's Policy Director and Research & Advocacy Associate. The intern will conduct detailed research into documents obtained through Freedom of Information Act requests, produce written analysis about research findings, support DWN's ability to track key relationships, and participate in internal policy discussions. DWN is seeking candidates with a strong interest in immigration, detention, advocacy, and public policy. This is a paid internship.

Responsibilities:
• Conduct research and analysis of detention facility contracts and other documents obtained through Freedom of Information Act requests;
• Review inspections of detention facilities and track detention-related updates;
• With support, draft complaints regarding mistreatment and mismanagement at detention facilities;
• Support DWN’s ability to track key Congressional relationships;
• Participate in DWN strategy discussions and join the Policy Director for some advocacy meetings with Congressional and Administrative decision-makers;
• Other duties as needed related to program development, management, and operations

Qualifications
• The ability to work effectively and collaboratively with diverse groups of people
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Proficient Microsoft Suite skills
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
• A collaborative work style and a self-directed spirit
• Demonstrated quantitative analysis skills a plus, but not required
• Spanish proficiency or fluency a plus, but not required
• All applicants must be enrolled in a related field of study and pursuing a degree or certificate
• Must be able to use own laptop

Start Date: January 2017
End Date: May 2017
