Search for Common Ground is seeking an intern to support its Children & Youth Division in its work supporting young people building peace. The internship will focus on supporting research and learning to improve policy and practice around youth, peace, and security. Note that this is an unpaid internship open to current university or graduate students.
The internship will be an opportunity to learn and improve competencies around:
- Research and analysis on youth, peace, and security
- Knowledge of methods and approaches to youth participation in peacebuilding and conflict transformation
- Writing and analytical skills
Key Responsibilities
A. Document learning from Children & Youth and wider Search programming
- Support team members in Colombo, Sri Lanka and Jos, Nigeria to document progress and learning from Collective Impact pilot initiatives
- Collect and analyze data on Search’s ongoing and recent programs engaging young people around the world
- Assist the Children & Youth Program Manager to document and share learning on different types of Search programs engaging young people in peacebuilding, including through documents and online discussions
- Contribute to Children & Youth division learning plans and initiatives
B. Research and evidence collection to support YPS policy and practice
- Conduct research on the latest evidence on youth, peace and security and on emerging areas and methodologies for programming with children and youth to inform Search program design and strategies
- Write blog posts and/or briefings on topics related to young people’s engagement in peacebuilding
- Support communication within Search about the latest evidence and findings on youth participation in peacebuilding
As internship descriptions cannot be exhaustive, the position holder may be required to undertake other duties that are broadly in line with the above key responsibilities.
Qualifications
Education and skills requirements:
- Currently in pursuit of a university or graduate degree - preferably in international relations, conflict studies, development studies, political science or similar
- Ability to work as part of a remote team
- Strong oral and written communication in English
- Analytical and organizational skills
- Prior (volunteering) experience in a related field is an asset
- Knowledge of French is an asset
- Ability to handle multiple tasks and tight deadlines.
Salary: This is an unpaid internship.
Location: This internship can be fulfilled remotely or at our headquarters in Washington, DC. Priority will be given to applicants able to work in time zone GMT-4.
Duration: The candidate must be available for at least 20 hours per week for a period of at least four months, starting in October 2019. Candidates available for a full-time, six-month internship are preferred.
