Spring 2021 Pass/Fail Deadline Reminder

April 15, 2021

Dear Students,
As we come to the last few weeks of the semester, I want to remind you of the Spring 2021 grading policy. Please read the following message carefully. I encourage all students to review your grading method selections for each of your courses to ensure they are accurate. You are required to make your final grading method selection by the last day of the class. For classes on the standard semester schedule, this deadline is May 11, 2021, at 10:59 EDT (which is 61 minutes before 12 midnight). For non-standard classes, consult the web app below for the deadline. There will be no changes to the grading method beyond this deadline and there will be no exceptions.
Pass/Fail Grading Policy for Spring 2021
Students will be able to opt in to courses that they wish to take on a Pass/Fail basis.
  • The Pass ("P") mark will now include grades of C- or better; the "P" will no longer include grades of D+, D, and D-.
  • If a student earns a grade of D+, D, D-, or F, those grades will be recorded.
  • While the "P" does not have an impact on a student's GPA, grades of D+, D, D-, and F will be factored into the GPA.
  • Students will be able to select the pass/fail grading method for up to seven (7) credits with automatic approval.
  • Students experiencing exceptional circumstances may request an exception to the seven-credit limit through their advisor and with the approval of their dean.
  • The "P" will count in Spring 2021 for any requirement, including courses in a major, minor, certificate, General Education, benchmark, or Limited Enrollment Program gateway (including courses that would ordinarily require a B-).
  • Please note that if you make no changes to the grading method of your courses before the deadline, it will remain the same as when you registered. If you registered for courses with the regular grading method, you will not receive Pass/Fail grades in those courses.

The website is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The deadline for choosing the pass/fail grading option, as well as for dropping a course with a "W", was extended until 10:59 PM EDT on the last day of spring classes, which in most cases is on May 11, 2021. Note that the deadline is NOT midnight, but rather 10:59 pm EDT. For more information, please see keeplearning.umd.edu. Questions can be directed to keeplearning.umd.edu.
