Fall 2023 Criminal Justice Program Police Accountability and Community Engagement Intern
Location: Crownsville, MD

The Governor’s Office of Crime Prevention, Youth, and Victim Services (GOCPYVS) seeks a Criminal Justice Program intern for Fall 2023 for our Police Accountability and Community Engagement Program. You will work alongside the Assistant Director of the program and collaborate with various internal and external stakeholders, including local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies; local, state, and federal governmental agencies; and members of various communities.

The primary functions of this position include supporting the Police Accountability, Community, and Transparency (PACT) program activities. PACT was included in former Governor Hogan’s Re-Fund the Police Initiative which continues to provide support and resources to the state and local agencies in their efforts to fight violent crime. PACT is primarily focused on increasing safety and training for law enforcement, promoting safe communities, and encouraging engagement between law enforcement and the community. Governor Hogan’s initiative included $24 million over a three-year period to be used to provide more body cameras, de-escalation training, and other critical tools to enhance community relationship building for state and local agencies.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Support research and development of reports for the Police Accountability, Community, and Transparency (PACT) Grant Fund Program. (30%)
  • Review and summarize grant program activities as reported by PACT grant recipients. (30%)
  • Provide operational support to PACT grant funded activities. (10%)
  • Assist with preparation and planning of meetings, events, or training activities for the PACT Grant Fund Program. (10%)
  • Other programmatic duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Police Accountability and Community Engagement Assistant Director. (10%)

The successful candidate will:
  • Be enrolled in a criminal justice, social sciences, or related field major or minor.
  • Be a Junior or higher standing (i.e., a minimum of 60 credit hours obtained).
  • Possess a demonstrated interest in criminal justice-related subjects.
  • Have a strong desire to engage with, and learn about, the criminal justice system.
  • Possess excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Be detail oriented and have strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently or with a group.

Preferred qualifications include:
  • Experience collaborating with governmental officials and stakeholders.
  • An understanding of grant writing and management.
  • Familiarity with event planning.
  • Past or present involvement with community-based organizations.

Program Highlights:
  • Program dates: September 2023 – December 2023, up to 30 hours per week
  • The program provides students interested in criminal justice with rewarding and substantive work assignments that contribute to the mission of the GOCPYVS to make Maryland safer.
  • The program offers an opportunity to network with professionals from the Governor’s Office of Crime Prevention, Youth, and Victim Services, the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, state and local law enforcement agencies, state and local government agencies, community-based organizations, and other entities who will support professional growth, career development, and evolving interests.
  • Learned outcomes or skills gained throughout this program include developing positive work habits and attitudes necessary for career success in the field of criminal justice receiving informal feedback from experienced GOCPYVS professionals; developing interpersonal communication and other critical skills necessary for success in the workplace; and building a portfolio of professional work experience in the public sector.
