Essential Functions:  This position performs all civil court functions to include processing and maintaining civil case files. The Judiciary Clerk issues writs, summonses, and subpoenas. Records liens and judgments. Enters dismissals and satisfactions. Other duties include entering all civil orders into the computer and following through with any additional instructions. Issues bench warrants, submits copies to appropriate parties, and sends appropriate court notices to all parties. Provides service to the public, attorneys, and court related personnel. Data Entry: Locate files, enter data in computer for new suits and pleadings, issue summonses, send notices, forward files to appropriate offices. Customer Service: Check, file stamp, assign file numbers; operate cash register; process registry money and bonds; assist attorneys, abstractors, general public, and court employees. Process requests for writs, including writs of garnishment; writs of execution; writs of body attachment; and Habeas Corpus. Enter court orders into computer; perform ordered clerk functions; send copies; issue publications and posting orders; and enter bonds. Enter courtroom work in computer, record Foreign Judgments, enter judgments in docket and index and mail Notice of Entry of Judgment. Issue subpoenas; enter dismissals and satisfactions and close case; enter costs; complete cost sheets; and maintain tickler system. Transfer cases to other courts; package and return required transcripts; prepare certified copies; receive and work cases received other courts.

Education:   High School Diploma (or GED equivalent)

Experience:  One (1) year of work experience, preferably in court operations, or in the fields of criminal justice, parole, and probation, legal or financial services.

Note:               A Bachelor’s Degree may substitute the required work experience.

A Paralegal/Associates Degree or 60 college credits may substitute the required work experience.

A Paralegal Certificate may substitute for the required work experience.

Skills/Abilities:    Knowledge of general office practices, procedures, and equipment; Standard legal forms and documents used in the Judiciary; Basic English and arithmetic to include, but not limited to, spelling, punctuation, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Skill in customer service and handling problems tactfully and patiently; Typing on a personal computer; Accuracy and attention to detail. Ability to use standard office and business equipment including, but not limited to, personal computers, word processing, spreadsheets, database software, copier, microfilm machine, register, scanner, fax machine, etc; use and maintain alphabetical and numerical filing systems; Communicate clearly, tactfully, and effectively with judges, the public, police agencies, attorneys, and other court officials and personnel, both verbally and in writing; Understand and abide by departmental rules, regulations, and procedures; Exercise tact, diplomacy, and impartiality in dealing with the public, law enforcement personnel, and attorneys; Follow procedures, verbal and written instructions, and protocols for any given assignment; Use proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling; Exercise independent judgment in interpreting and applying appropriate policy, procedure, rule, law, and/or regulation to a situation.
