Social Science Research Internships with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission

Social Science Research Internships with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission

The mission of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is to ensure justice and equality in the workplace, and its work includes research toward preventing discrimination within the federal workforce. EEOC is responsible for enforcing federal laws that make it illegal to discriminate against a job applicant or an employee because of the person's race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, gender identity, and sexual orientation), national origin, age (40 or older), disability or genetic information.

EEOC's Office of Federal Operations ensures equality of opportunity within the Federal government through its oversight function and by vigorously enforcing, through our regulatory and adjudicatory authority, federal legislation prohibiting discrimination in employment by government agencies.

The Federal Sector Graduate Research Fellowship provides a unique opportunity for high performing individuals to join a team conducting innovative statistical research and trend analysis.

The Federal Sector Graduate Research Fellowship supports this commitment by providing graduate students the opportunity to contribute to the success of the Commission. During the non-reimbursable detail assignment, fellows will share their knowledge and gain a broader perspective of federal sector EEO by working with the leadership team within the Office of Federal Operations at agency headquarters in Washington, D.C., specifically within the Reports and Evaluation Division (RED).

The Federal Sector Social Science Research Internship offers undergraduate and/or graduate students in sociology, psychology, economics, or related fields a challenging experience that is relevant to your current studies and future career. Interns work alongside Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) professional staff to ensure justice and equality in the workplace.

Responsibilities will vary based on the fellow or intern's skill set, but may include:

  • Producing research for government reports on the presence and prevention of employment discrimination within the Federal government
  • Writing literature reviews
  • Editing documents
  • Data analysis, including statistical and content analysis
  • Displaying data trends using creative data visualization techniques

Both positions require the ability to work at EEOC's Headquarters in Washington, D.C., which is easily accessible by public transportation. The positions are unpaid. Fellows are asked to commit to work at least 15 hours per week and interns are asked to commit to work a minimum of 10 hours per week for a minimum of three months.
