If you bring me your application and check by Thursday Feb 11 I will deliver to Dr. Brooks for you.

Alpha Phi Sigma is the National Criminal Justice Honor Society founded in 1942. Alpha Phi Sigma recognizes academic excellence of Undergraduate and Graduate students of Criminal Justice, as well as Juris Doctorate students.  The goals of Alpha Phi Sigma are to honor and promote academic excellence, community service, educational leadership and unity (http://www.alphaphisigma.org/).  The CCJS faculty advisor for Alpha Phi Sigma is Dr. Laure Brooks.

Membership Requirements:
Membership is open to CCJS majors who have completed at least 40 total credits with at least 12 credits in CCJS courses. Undergraduate Applicants must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.20 and a minimum CCJS major grade point average of a 3.40.

To Apply:
Applicants must fill out the application, submit an unofficial transcript, and a check (personal is fine) made out to Alpha Phi Sigma for $55.00 ($50 of which goes to the National fee and $5 goes to the local chapter).  Students should place the completed application, transcript and check in Dr. Brooks' mailbox inside Lefrak Hall room 2220. Applications are processed once at the beginning of the Fall semester (due: October 1) and once at the beginning of the Spring semester (due: February 16) and it generally takes a few months to get official acceptance.  Once a student has been accepted, he or she will receive a certificate and pin.  Students are notified of their acceptance via Dr. Brooks.

The application can be found on the Alpha Phi Sigma national website at student membership application.  The name of the local chapter is Omega Iota.

If you bring me your application and check by Thursday Feb 11 I will deliver to Dr. Brooks for you.

You can leave them in an envelope with your name and UID on the front.  Please place in the hanging file next to my door if  I am not here and email me to let me know you dropped it.

Here is the information you need to calculate GPA.  Unfortunately, Alpha Phi Sigma requires that the GPA include calculations from all post-secondary institutions.  So you will need to calculate your cumulative GPA and major GPA since UMCP does not include transfer GPAs in their calculations.  Here is what you need to know to calculate:

A=4 quality points per credit (3 credits=12 quality points)
B=3 quality points per credit (3 credits=9 quality points)
C=2 quality points per credit (3 credits=6 quality points)
D=1 quality point per credit (3 credits=3 quality points)

GPA = (sum of quality points) / (number of total credits)

Use only letter grades—plus and minuses do not count right now.

You will use the same formula for both the cumulative and major GPA.  For cumulative GPA, scroll down to close to the bottom of your degree navigator.  You will need to calculate the GPA using all courses included in “Courses Used for this Program”, except for courses you are registered for but have not taken.  Alternatively you can use your transcript.  The nice thing about degree navigator is that it tells you which classes you are using from your transfer institution.

For the major GPA, you can look at the same place in Degree Navigator but only include CCJS courses

To join this semester, I must have all of your materials, including check by Thursday Feb 11 at 4pm.  After this time you would need to deliver your application to Lefrak Hall on the College Park campus by Feb 16.
